ha-apply-change

ha-apply-change is a skill for Claude Code from gtapps/hermitd. It costs 30 tokens per session (502 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A safety-checked workflow for applying Home Assistant automation or script YAML. Home Assistant is software for controlling smart-home devices.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after creating or changing an automation or script to preview affected devices, validate the YAML, apply it through the Home Assistant API, and optionally reload that part of Home Assistant.
Why use it?
It checks the configuration and policy before sending changes to Home Assistant, reducing the risk of unsafe or mistaken device changes.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00030 $0.00502
Opus 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00201
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00100
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00050

Security

Grade A, and why

ha-apply-change scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Apply HA Change

Steps

  1. Pre-check: Run ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha policy-check <artifact_path> to verify safety. Read the decision field in the JSON output:

    • "deny" (strict mode): stop and explain why. Create a proposal via /hermitd:proposal-create.
    • "ask" (ask mode): include the sensitive entities in the preview in step 2.
    • "allow": proceed to step 2.
  2. Preview: Present the artifact, policy result, affected entities, and reload domain. A changed artifact or target requires a fresh preview.

  3. Validate and apply: Run ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha validate-apply <artifact_path> --reload automation (or script).

    • This runs HA config check, pushes the config to HA via REST, then reloads the domain.
    • The artifact must include id: at the top level — if missing, the CLI derives an ID from the alias or filename and warns in the output. A derived ID drifts if the alias is renamed, creating a duplicate.
  4. Post-apply: Check the JSON output for creation_ok and read .hermit/raw/audit-ha-apply-latest.md.

    • creation_ok: true — config was pushed and verified via REST. Reload picks it up immediately.
    • creation_ok: false + message contains "YAML mode" — HA is in YAML config mode (403). Tell the operator to place the generated YAML in their HA config directory and reload manually.
    • creation_ok: false + other message — push failed with a validation error from HA. Show the error message and suggest fixing the YAML.
    • If overall successful: update your auto memory if this automation introduces a new pattern.

Safety

  • The apply path only reloads automation and script domains.
  • A deny policy verdict stops the apply; an ask verdict requires approval covering the sensitive entities.
  • The operator must confirm before any reload happens.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
