ha-setup-house

ha-setup-house is a skill for Claude Code from gtapps/hermitd. It costs 51 tokens per session (997 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guided setup workflow for Home Assistant, a system for controlling and automating smart-home devices. It creates rooms, assigns devices and entities, adds helpers, and prepares starter automations using existing command-line tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for listing current rooms, devices, entities, and helpers; creating areas such as kitchens or bedrooms; assigning items; and setting up basic automation structure.
Why use it?
It helps organise a smart home without manually carrying out each setup command, while requiring safety approval before structural changes are made.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.00997
Opus 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00399
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00199
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00100

Security

Grade A, and why

ha-setup-house scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Set Up Your House

Guided build-out of your Home Assistant house structure. Each step runs existing ha-agent-lab commands; no new subsystem. Every write is gated by ha_safety_mode (strict = proposal, ask = native approval).

Steps

1. Take inventory

Run all four in parallel and present a summary:

${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha list-areas
${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha list-entities --registry
${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha list-devices
${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha list-helpers

Report:

  • Number of areas, entities, devices, and helpers found
  • Entities with no area assigned (unplaced)
  • Devices with no area assigned (unplaced)
  • Whether a context snapshot exists at .hermit/raw/snapshot-ha-normalized-latest.json

2. Create areas

Ask: "Which rooms or zones would you like to create? (e.g. Living Room, Kitchen, Bedroom 1)"

For each area the operator names:

  1. Check the list-areas output — skip if the area already exists (case-insensitive match on name).
  2. Preview the target, then run: ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha create-area "<name>"
  3. Handle the result:
    • "ok": true — created; confirm to operator.
    • "blocked": true — ha_safety_mode is strict; explain and create a proposal via /hermitd:proposal-create.

After creating all areas, re-run ha list-areas and store the updated area map.

3. Assign unplaced entities

From the unplaced entity list (step 1), ask the operator which entities to assign and to which area.

For each assignment:

${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha set-entity-area <entity_id> --area <area_id>

Use the area_id from the list-areas output, not the display name.

Handle success and policy refusal the same as step 2.

4. Assign unplaced devices

From the unplaced device list (step 1), follow the same pattern:

${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/ha-agent-lab ha set-device-area <device_id> --area <area_id>

5. Provision helpers

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
