Music Theory Validator

Music Theory Validator is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from GuitarAlchemist/ga. It costs 38 tokens per session (582 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of rules for checking whether chords, scales, and intervals follow music theory. It uses pitch classes, which group notes that are equivalent across octaves, and semitone distances between notes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or validating musical objects in the Guitar Alchemist theory engine, including chord qualities, chord extensions, and pitch-based scales.
Why use it?
It helps prevent incorrect musical objects or generated content from entering the theory engine. This avoids manually checking chord formulas and scale definitions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.00582
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00291
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00116
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00058

Security

Grade A, and why

Music Theory Validator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Music Theory Validator

This skill provides the logical constraints and musical axioms for the Guitar Alchemist domain. Use this when implementing new musical objects or validating generated content.

1. Core Musical Axioms

  1. Octave Equivalence: All pitch classes are calculated modulo 12.
  2. Minimal Chord: A chord MUST have at least 2 notes (dyad), though 3+ is the standard for triads.
  3. Root Prominence: A chord always has a Root which defines its identity and formula.

2. Chord Quality Rules

The following semitone offsets from the root define triad qualities:

Quality Interval 1 (Semitones) Interval 2 (Semitones)
Major 4 (Major 3rd) 7 (Perfect 5th)
Minor 3 (Minor 3rd) 7 (Perfect 5th)
Diminished 3 (Minor 3rd) 6 (Diminished 5th)
Augmented 4 (Major 3rd) 8 (Augmented 5th)

3. Extension Logic

Extensions depend on the presence of specific interval classes:

  • 7th: Requires semitone 10 (m7) or 11 (M7).
  • 9th: Requires semitone 2 (or 14).
  • 11th: Requires semitone 5 (or 17).
  • 13th: Requires semitone 9 (or 21).

4. Scale Validation

  • A scale is defined by its PitchClassSet.
  • Common scales like Prometheus (0, 2, 4, 6, 9, 10) or Diatonic (7 notes) have fixed interval patterns.
  • Always check consistency via IntervalClassVector.

5. Domain Invariants

  • A chord must have a root note and a pitch class set.
  • PitchClassSet is a tonal realization of the notes.
  • Inversion indices start at 0 (Root Position).

6. Verification Steps for AntiGravity

Before committing a new musical definition:

  1. Calculate the semitone array.
  2. Match against the quality rules in Section 2.
  3. Check the Symbol generation logic to ensure it matches GenerateSymbol() in Chord.cs.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

Music Theory Validator is a skill published in the GitHub repository GuitarAlchemist/ga (2 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 582 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
