paper-agent: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/paper-crawler/SKILL.md

paper-crawler is a skill for Claude Code from Guo-Chenxu/paper-agent. It costs 44 tokens per session (1,471 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A paper-collection tool for finding research papers across sources such as arXiv, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, and USENIX proceedings. It can standardize records, remove duplicates, and optionally download PDFs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to gather candidate papers for a literature review or survey, with normalized metadata and optional preference for CCF-ranked venues.
Why use it?
It reduces the manual work of searching several research databases and cleaning their results into one collection.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00044 $0.01471
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00736
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00294
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00147

Security

Grade A, and why

paper-crawler scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 9 executable files (scripts/acm_crawler.py, scripts/arxiv_ccf_crawler.py, scripts/arxiv_crawler.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Paper Crawler

Skill Goal

Automated paper collection from multiple providers:

  1. Multi-provider crawling: OpenAlex, arXiv, Semantic Scholar, USENIX proceedings
  2. Metadata normalization and cross-provider deduplication
  3. Optional PDF download with arXiv title-based fallback

When To Use

  • Need candidate papers from multiple public metadata sources
  • Want normalized metadata, deduplication, and CCF A/B venue preference
  • Starting a literature review or research survey workflow

Execution Time Warning

Paper crawling involves network requests to multiple external APIs, PDF downloads, and cross-provider deduplication, which can take a long time. It is recommended to set the Bash tool timeout to at least 15 minutes (timeout: 900000) when invoking crawler scripts. If the command is still running when the timeout is reached, extend and continue waiting rather than treating it as a failure.

Environment

Run crawler commands from the repository root with the active Python interpreter.

Required packages:

python -m pip install requests arxiv tqdm pytest

Optional Semantic Scholar API key:

export SEMANTIC_SCHOLAR_API_KEY=...

Scripts

  • Unified multi-provider crawler: ./scripts/multi_source_crawler.py
  • Shared record normalization and deduplication helpers: ./scripts/paper_record.py
  • OpenAlex provider: ./scripts/openalex_crawler.py
  • arXiv provider and title fallback: ./scripts/arxiv_crawler.py
  • Semantic Scholar provider: ./scripts/semantic_scholar_crawler.py
  • USENIX proceedings provider: ./scripts/usenix_crawler.py
  • Legacy OpenAlex wrappers: ./scripts/ieee_crawler.py, ./scripts/acm_crawler.py

References

  • CCF recommended venues: ./references/ccf_venues_all.json
  • Source: 中国计算机学会推荐国际学术会议和期刊目录(第七版, 2026年)

Collection Workflow

Step 1: Define External Crawl Inputs

All research-topic queries must come from command-line input. Do not rely on preset query strings in crawler code.

Recommended input parameters:

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

paper-crawler is a skill published in the GitHub repository Guo-Chenxu/paper-agent (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 44 tokens to every session and 1,471 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
