add-constant

add-constant is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Hackbyrd/orbital-express. It costs 65 tokens per session (786 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A coding rule for keeping shared constants and enum-like values in one `helpers/constants.js` file, with two export forms for use across the codebase.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding statuses, roles, locales, types, or other values that appear in multiple parts of an application.
Why use it?
It prevents the same value from being typed differently in different places and makes changes easier to track.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00065 $0.00786
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00393
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00157
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00079

Security

Grade A, and why

add-constant scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 40 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Add a global constant / enum

helpers/constants.js is the single source of truth for global constants. No magic strings: any string literal that is — or is likely to be — used in more than one place (locales, statuses, types, roles, enum-like values) must be defined once here and referenced. Never hardcode 'ADMIN', 'PENDING', or 'en' in actions/tasks/models — use ADMIN_ROLE.ADMIN, the status constant, LOCALE.EN, etc. Read README "helpers/constants.js".

When the constant changes feature behavior, schema, authorization, or API contracts, include its values and migration compatibility in the approved plan before editing. Confirm affected features have complete structure with yarn repair <Feature> --dry-run, then yarn repair <Feature>; use generators for any missing feature scaffolding.

Example: defaultValue: 'en'defaultValue: constants.LOCALE.EN; joi...default('en').default(LOCALE.EN). If a constant for the value doesn't exist yet, add it (below) rather than typing the literal.

Rules

  • Constant names are ALL_CAPS_WITH_UNDERSCORES.
  • Dual-export pattern — every enum-style constant is exported in two forms, defined as an adjacent pair:
    • Object (singular name) — for value lookup in code (autocomplete, typo-safe).
    • Array (plural name) — for Joi validation (joi.string().valid(...XS)) and iteration.
    // order statuses
ORDER_STATUS: { PENDING: 'PENDING', ACTIVE: 'ACTIVE', COMPLETED: 'COMPLETED' }, // object — lookup
ORDER_STATUSES: ['PENDING', 'ACTIVE', 'COMPLETED'], // array — validation

  • Naming the pair: prefer natural singular/plural (WEEKDAY/WEEKDAYS, PRODUCT_TYPE/PRODUCT_TYPES). Fall back to an _ARR suffix only when the plural is awkward (POST_GENERATED_BY / POST_GENERATED_BY_ARR). Don't mix conventions arbitrarily.
  • Group related constants under a comment header; keep the object/array pair adjacent; order alphabetically within a group.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

add-constant is a skill published in the GitHub repository Hackbyrd/orbital-express (14 stars, last pushed 15d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 65 tokens to every session and 786 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
