zettelkasten

zettelkasten is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from hamchowderr/braynee. It costs 78 tokens per session (480 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Zettelkasten note-taking skill for creating small, linked notes in a Zettelkasten, a personal knowledge system built from connected ideas.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create permanent notes, search existing notes, process an inbox, and review notes that lack links.
Why use it?
It turns scattered captures into focused notes with links and sources, making related ideas easier to find and develop.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00078 $0.00480
Opus 5 $0.00039 $0.00240
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00096
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00048

Measured 4d ago against content hash 19c272528da8, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

zettelkasten scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/zettel.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Zettelkasten Skill

Manages atomic notes in Zettelkasten/. One idea per note, densely linked.

Commands

# Create a new atomic note
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/zettel.py new "Title of the idea"

# Find atoms related to a topic
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/zettel.py find "QUERY"

# Process inbox captures into atomic notes
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/zettel.py inbox

# Review atoms that have no outbound links yet (orphans)
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/zettel.py review

Atomic Note Format

---
type: atom
id: YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS
tags: [concept, domain]
links: []
created: YYYY-MM-DD
---

# Note Title

One focused idea. 3-5 sentences max. No fluff.

## Links

- [[Related Atom 1]] — why it connects
- [[Related Atom 2]] — why it connects

## Source

Where the idea came from (book, session, conversation, project).

Zettelkasten Principles

  • One idea per note — if you're using "and", split it
  • Link generously — connections between atoms are where value lives
  • Write in your own words — don't copy-paste, synthesize
  • Evergreen titles — state the idea as a claim: "Systems thinking reveals unintended consequences"
  • Source everything — where did this come from?

Location

All atoms live in Zettelkasten/ at the vault root. Named by ID, not topic — the title is inside the note.

Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

zettelkasten is a skill published in the GitHub repository hamchowderr/braynee (2 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 78 tokens to every session and 480 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
