spec-review

spec-review is a skill for Claude Code from hamzaPixl/pixl-ai. It costs 78 tokens per session (1,881 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A requirements checker that compares a codebase with a product requirements document, or PRD, which describes what a project should do. It reports implemented, missing, extra, and changed requirements.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review PRD coverage, find specification gaps, and detect changes between review points.
Why use it?
It shows whether the code matches the agreed plan and catches missing work or scope creep.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00078 $0.01881
Opus 5.5 $0.00031 $0.00752
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00376
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00188

Security

Grade A, and why

spec-review scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 183 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Overview

This skill compares what you built against what you planned. It parses a PRD or requirements document into atomic, checkable requirements, scans the codebase for evidence of implementation, and produces a coverage report with gap analysis. On subsequent runs, it detects spec drift — requirements that were added, removed, changed, or reprioritized since the last review.

Why this matters: Projects are non-linear. Requirements drift, features get descoped, priorities shift. Without periodic validation, teams build the wrong thing or miss critical features. The best time to checkpoint is at natural boundaries — review completion, spec update, sprint end.

Required References

Before starting, read these references for detailed strategies:

  • references/requirement-decomposition.md — how to parse PRDs into checkable items
  • references/coverage-analysis.md — codebase scanning strategies
  • references/drift-detection.md — snapshot diffing, drift classification

Mode Detection

Determine the operating mode from the argument and stored state:

Input Stored requirements.json? Mode
File path, URL, or text No A: Baseline — parse PRD, scan codebase, produce initial coverage
File path, URL, or text Yes B: Drift + Coverage — detect spec drift, re-scan, compare
rescan or no argument Yes C: Rescan — re-scan codebase against stored spec
No argument No Error — ask user for PRD

Storage location in the target project:

.context/spec/
├── spec-snapshot-<timestamp>.md # Immutable PRD copies
├── requirements.json # Decomposed requirements (mutable)
├── coverage-<timestamp>.json # Coverage scan results
└── drift-log.jsonl # Append-only drift entries

Step 1: Parse and Decompose Requirements (Modes A, B)

  1. Read the PRD source:
    • If the argument is a file path (contains / or .md or .txt or .pdf): Read with the Read tool
    • If the argument is a URL (starts with http): Fetch with WebFetch
    • Otherwise: treat the argument as inline text

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

spec-review is a skill published in the GitHub repository hamzaPixl/pixl-ai (2 stars, last pushed 6mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 78 tokens to every session and 1,881 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
