instrument-feature-flag

instrument-feature-flag is a skill for Claude Code from harness/harness-skills. It costs 197 tokens per session (3,148 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A coding assistant workflow that connects application code to an existing Harness FME feature flag. A feature flag is a switch that lets a team turn behavior on or off or choose a setting for selected users.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to gate a code path, select a user or traffic identity, define treatments and fallbacks, and test the connection between the wrapper and the call site.
Why use it?
It removes much of the manual work of finding the right flag, understanding the application, and adding the smallest safe code change. It prefers an existing code wrapper and does not change flag settings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00197 $0.03148
Opus 5.5 $0.00079 $0.01259
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00039 $0.00630
Haiku 4.5 $0.00020 $0.00315

Security

Grade A, and why

instrument-feature-flag scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Instrument Feature Flag

Skill identifier: instrument-feature-flag. Gate application code behind an existing FME flag: inspect the real app first, prefer or design a small customer-extensible wrapper, get it approved, implement the minimal edits, and test at the wrapper and call-site boundary. Related: /create-feature-flag (new flag), /update-flag-targeting (missing/insufficient targeting), /feature-flag-onboarding (first-time setup, which delegates here for code).

Tools

Works through the Harness MCP server or the Harness CLI; names are from tool-map.md. This skill only reads Harness flag state for the selected environment — flag/definition writes are delegated to /create-feature-flag and /update-flag-targeting.

Operation MCP CLI
List flags harness_list · fme_feature_flag · size: 50 · compact: false harness list feature_flag --json --limit 50
Get flag harness_get · fme_feature_flag · params.feature_flag_name harness get feature_flag <name> --json
List environments harness_list · fme_environment · compact: false harness list fme_environment --json
List traffic types harness_list · fme_traffic_type · compact: false harness list traffic_type --json
Get definition harness_get · fme_feature_flag_definition · params: { feature_flag_name, environment_id } harness get feature_flag:definition <flag> --env <env-id> --json

Instructions

Phase 1: Scope

Follow scope-establishment.md. Carry confirmed account/org/project, transport and application target from the request/caller; ask only for missing context before API calls. Keep Harness scope separate from the application repo/runtime — never derive one from the other. See mcp-setup.md for a supported CLI or MCP choice. List environments and require one explicitly confirmed environment before any flag/definition handoff. Resolve its ID and isProduction; if none is selected or the choice is ambiguous, ask and STOP—never inherit an all-environments default. This selection does not authorize a write.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
