superpowers-sage:wp-hooks-lifecycle

superpowers-sage:wp-hooks-lifecycle is a skill for Claude Code from hekivo/superpowers-sage. It costs 141 tokens per session (1,352 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to WordPress hooks, which are named points in the WordPress process where code can run or modify data. It explains actions, filters, priorities, lifecycle order, and where hooks belong in Sage/Acorn.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding, changing, or debugging WordPress actions and filters, such as registering content types, changing page output, loading scripts, or connecting hooks in Acorn.
Why use it?
It helps code run at the correct time and distinguishes actions that do something from filters that change a value. This reduces timing bugs and misplaced WordPress logic.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00141 $0.01352
Opus 5 $0.00071 $0.00676
Sonnet 5 $0.00028 $0.00270
Haiku 4.5 $0.00014 $0.00135

Security

Grade A, and why

superpowers-sage:wp-hooks-lifecycle scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

WordPress Hooks and Lifecycle

When to use

When adding, modifying, or debugging WordPress hooks (actions and filters) within a Sage/Acorn project. This covers where to place hooks in the Sage architecture, understanding execution order, managing priority, using dependency injection in callbacks, and diagnosing hook-related issues.

Inputs required

  • The behavior to implement or modify (what the hook should accomplish)
  • Whether the task requires an action (side effect) or a filter (data transformation)
  • The appropriate lifecycle stage for the hook

Procedure

1. Understand actions vs filters

  • Actions perform side effects: register post types, enqueue scripts, send emails, flush caches.
    • add_action('hook_name', $callback, $priority, $accepted_args)
    • Callback returns nothing (return value is ignored).
  • Filters transform data: modify queries, alter output, change settings.
    • add_filter('hook_name', $callback, $priority, $accepted_args)
    • Callback MUST return the filtered value.

2. WordPress lifecycle order

See references/hook-timing.md for the full boot sequence and early/late hook guidance.

Quick reference:

plugins_loaded → after_setup_theme → init → wp_loaded → wp_enqueue_scripts → the_content

3. Where to place hooks in Sage

See references/acorn-hook-patterns.md for the three correct hook locations in Acorn.

Preferred: boot() method in a ServiceProvider:

class ProjectServiceProvider extends ServiceProvider
{
    public function boot(): void
    {
        add_action('init', [$this, 'registerPostTypes']);
        add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', [$this, 'enqueueAssets']);
        add_filter('the_content', [$this, 'appendProjectMeta']);
        add_filter('pre_get_posts', [$this, 'modifyProjectQuery']);
    }
}

4. Priority and argument count

// Default priority is 10, default accepted_args is 1
add_action('save_post', [$this, 'onSave'], 10, 3);

// Lower number = runs earlier
add_action('init', [$this, 'earlyInit'], 5);
add_action('init', [$this, 'lateInit'], 20);

// accepted_args must match callback parameters
add_filter('the_title', function (string $title, int $post_id) {
    return $title . ' #' . $post_id;
}, 10, 2);

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
