research

research is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from helderberto/agent-skills. It costs 69 tokens per session (241 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research workflow that investigates questions using original sources such as official documentation, source code, specifications, and first-party APIs, then saves the findings in a cited Markdown file.

In plain words
What is it for?
Researching technical topics, checking documentation or API facts, and delegating background reading while you continue working.
Why use it?
It removes the need to do the reading and source-checking yourself. Each claim is linked back to the source that supports it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00069 $0.00241
Opus 5 $0.00034 $0.00120
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.00048
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00024

Measured 4d ago against content hash 59c708586bb0, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

research scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Research

Spin up a background agent to do the reading, so the user keeps working while it investigates.

Give the agent this job:

  1. Investigate against primary sources — official docs, source code, specs, first-party APIs — never a secondary write-up of them. Follow every claim back to the source that owns it.
  2. Write the findings to a single Markdown file, citing each claim's source inline (link or path).
  3. Save it where the repo already keeps such notes. Match the existing convention; if there is none, put it in .specs/research/<slug>.md and say where.

Report the file path back when the agent finishes. Don't summarize the findings inline unless asked — the cited file is the deliverable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

research is a skill published in the GitHub repository helderberto/agent-skills (14 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 69 tokens to every session and 241 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
