iot-protocols

iot-protocols is a skill for Claude Code from HermeticOrmus/LibreEmbed-Claude-Code. It costs 84 tokens per session (4,558 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A reference library for IoT communication protocols, with selection guidance, message flows, device models, and example client code. It covers MQTT, CoAP, LwM2M, BLE GATT, LoRaWAN, Thread, and Zigbee.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose a protocol, design MQTT topics and delivery flows, model CoAP or LwM2M interactions, tune BLE connections, or build clients with Paho, Zephyr, or ESP-IDF.
Why use it?
It gives concrete patterns for comparing protocols and designing their message and connection behavior.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00084 $0.04558
Opus 5.5 $0.00034 $0.01823
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00912
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00456

Security

Grade A, and why

iot-protocols scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 15d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

QoS 1 publish flow

PUBLISHER BROKER SUBSCRIBER
    | | |
    |─ PUBLISH (msg_id=N) ────→| |
    | |─ PUBLISH (msg_id=M) ───→|
    | |←── PUBACK (M) ──────────|
    |←─ PUBACK (N) ────────────| |

Retransmit logic:

  • If PUBACK not received within timeout (default 5-30s), publisher retransmits with DUP=1.
  • Subscriber may receive duplicate; deduplicate on app-side via msg_id.

QoS 2 publish flow

PUBLISHER BROKER
    | |
    |─ PUBLISH (id=N) ────────→|
    |←─ PUBREC (N) ────────────|
    |─ PUBREL (N) ────────────→|
    |←─ PUBCOMP (N) ───────────|

State persisted at publisher between PUBLISH and PUBCOMP. Retransmit PUBLISH if PUBREC times out; retransmit PUBREL if PUBCOMP times out.

LWT setup

In the CONNECT packet:

will_topic: /devices/${id}/status
will_payload: {"online": false}
will_qos: 1
will_retain: true

When broker detects ungraceful disconnect (TCP RST, keep-alive timeout), it publishes the will message. Subscribers see "device offline" without explicit signaling.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

iot-protocols is a skill published in the GitHub repository HermeticOrmus/LibreEmbed-Claude-Code (50 stars, last pushed 6d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 84 tokens to every session and 4,558 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-01.
