heurist-finance: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/dividend-income/SKILL.md

dividend-income is a skill for Claude Code from heurist-network/heurist-finance. It costs 92 tokens per session (1,160 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to evaluating stocks that pay dividends, with emphasis on whether the payments are covered by cash flow. It examines yield, payout history, free cash flow, debt maturities, and measures relevant to property and pipeline companies.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to test dividend sustainability, identify yield traps, compare dividend growth with high-yield choices, and assess dividend stocks, real-estate investment trusts, and master limited partnerships.
Why use it?
A high dividend yield can result from a falling share price and may signal that investors expect a cut. Cash-flow coverage and stress checks give a clearer view than looking at the yield or earnings alone.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00092 $0.01160
Opus 5.5 $0.00037 $0.00464
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00232
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00116

Measured 13d ago against content hash f2c5d0a7cf35, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

dividend-income scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Dividend Income

Shared plumbing and output contract: ../_shared/analyst-core.md. The organizing fact: an unusually high yield is a price, not a gift — the market charging admission to a risk it can see. The skill is determining whether the market is right (trap) or overshooting (opportunity), which is a cash-flow question, never a yield-screen question.

The trap detector (run on any yield that catches the eye)

Data: equity_overview (yield, payout, history), xbrl_fact_trends for the real series — PaymentsOfDividendsCommonStock, CFO, capex (PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment), debt maturities; prices for the yield's own history.

  1. Coverage on free cash flow, not EPS. FCF payout = dividends ÷ (CFO − capex). < ~70% is comfortable; > 100% means the dividend is being borrowed. EPS-based payout ratios hide it — EPS carries non-cash items and buyback-shrunk denominators. Compute trailing-4q and the 3-year trend; deteriorating coverage with a "committed" dividend is the pre-cut signature.
  2. Relative-yield alarm: yield > ~2× its sector median, or > the company's own 10-year average by multiple points, is the market pricing a cut. The historical pattern: by the time a stressed payer finally cuts, the stock has already taken the damage — and often rallies on the cut (uncertainty resolved). So the trap isn't the cut; it's the ride down to it.
  3. Balance-sheet collision test: debt maturities inside 24 months vs FCF after dividends. A dividend competing with a refinancing wall loses — check whether the credit market (bond yields via web if findable) already disagrees with the equity market's yield read.
  4. Cyclical peak-payout trap: a commodity/cyclical yielding 8% on peak earnings is yielding 8% of a number that's about to halve — run coverage on mid-cycle FCF (see valuation-expectations on cyclical earnings). Variable-dividend policies (many energy names) are honest about this; fixed promises on cyclical cash flows are not.
  5. Sector-native metrics: REITs — coverage on FFO/AFFO (via web/filings; GAAP EPS is meaningless under depreciation), plus lease duration vs rate environment. MLPs/midstream — distributable cash flow and incentive structures. BDCs/mortgage REITs — the double-digit yields are leveraged spread bets; label them as such, not "income."

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
