heurist-finance: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/position-sizing/SKILL.md

position-sizing is a skill for Claude Code from heurist-network/heurist-finance. It costs 81 tokens per session (1,343 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A position-sizing and risk-budgeting guide estimates how much money to put into a trade or portfolio position. It considers the quality of the expected edge, volatility, possible drawdown, correlation with other holdings, and the risk of losing too much capital.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to size stock, options, short, or additional positions; compare sizing methods; assess averaging down; and set total risk limits.
Why use it?
Even a trade with a useful advantage can cause serious damage if it is too large or if several positions fail for the same reason. This helps limit portfolio heat, drawdowns, and the chance of ruin while recognising that estimates are uncertain.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00081 $0.01343
Opus 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00537
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00269
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00134

Security

Grade A, and why

position-sizing scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Position Sizing

Shared plumbing and output contract: ../_shared/analyst-core.md. Sizing is the one decision that operates on every trade, and the one public skills reduce to "risk 2%." The truths that matter: sizing errors compound geometrically (oversizing a positive-edge strategy can produce ruin), and every sizing formula's inputs are estimates — so the meta-rule is to size for the uncertainty in the estimate, not the estimate.

The three frameworks (use ≥2, take the smaller answer)

1. Fractional Kelly. Kelly fraction f* = p − q/b (p win prob, q=1−p, b win/loss ratio) maximizes long-run growth if the inputs are exact. They never are — and Kelly is brutally asymmetric to input error: betting 2× true Kelly produces zero long-run growth with wild swings. Practitioner consensus (Thorp; MacLean/Ziemba): ¼ to ½ Kelly, which keeps ~75%+ of the growth at ~25% of the variance. Workflow: estimate p and b from the scenario table (judgmental — label it), compute f*, quote ¼–½ of it, and show the sensitivity ("if your 60% win estimate is really 50%, Kelly goes negative — that's how little room this edge has"). A 3-scenario table collapses to binary Kelly inputs by folding: p = combined probability of the profitable scenarios, b = probability-weighted average gain of those ÷ probability-weighted average loss of the rest — label the collapse.

2. Volatility targeting. Size ∝ target_vol / realized_vol of the position (compute 63-day realized from prices SYM --out FILE; cap the multiplier at 1). Portfolio target for an active retail book: ~10–15% annualized. This is the fix that roughly doubled momentum's Sharpe in the academic record (Barroso & Santa-Clara; Moreira & Muir generalize it) — its real function is forcing smaller size in exactly the high-vol conditions where conviction feels highest. A 60-vol name gets a third of a 20-vol name's dollars at equal conviction, no exceptions by vibes.

3. Stop-based risk budgeting (the field-practical one): position = (account × risk-per-trade) ÷ (entry − invalidation). Risk 0.5–1.5% of account per idea for an active book — but the number that actually governs is portfolio heat: the sum of open risk across positions, ≤ ~5–6%. Heat is what the "2% rule" misses: six uncorrelated 1% risks are 6% heat; six correlated 1% risks are one 6% bet (see below). The invalidation price comes from the thesis (technical-evidence for placement discipline), never from the desired position size — sizing to a stop you moved to afford the size is the tail wagging the dog.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

position-sizing is a skill published in the GitHub repository heurist-network/heurist-finance (11 stars, last pushed 14d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 81 tokens to every session and 1,343 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-24.
