heurist-finance: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/short-thesis/SKILL.md

short-thesis is a skill for Claude Code from heurist-network/heurist-finance. It costs 79 tokens per session (1,171 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A method for building and testing a case that a stock should fall. It examines why the business or valuation may be wrong, what event could expose the problem, and how borrowing shares or buying put options affects the trade.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to assess potential short trades, overvalued companies, suspected fraud, or growth stories whose business results may not support their prices.
Why use it?
A stock can look overvalued and still keep rising, while short-selling can cause losses without a fixed limit. This method checks for a concrete reason, a possible trigger, and the risk of a short squeeze, when rising demand forces short sellers to buy back shares.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00079 $0.01171
Opus 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00468
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00234
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00117

Measured 13d ago against content hash f3d115de0c4d, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

short-thesis scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Short Thesis

Shared plumbing and output contract: ../_shared/analyst-core.md. Shorting has inverted math (losses unbounded, winners shrink as they work, position grows against you when wrong) — so a short thesis needs more than a mirrored long: it needs a reason, a catalyst, and a squeeze gate. Overvaluation alone is none of these.

The three-legged test — all three or no short

1. The reason (why it's wrong, not just rich). The durable short archetypes, roughly in order of reliability:

  • Fading fundamentals dressed as growth — the forensic cluster from fundamental-forensics (run it; it's the evidence engine for this skill): revenue >30% with CFO/NI <0.5 for 2+ years, DSO rising, receivables outgrowing revenue.
  • Quadratic cost structures (Chanos): the model only works if customer acquisition scales geometrically while unit economics never close — growth is the liability.
  • Broken cyclical still priced as secular — the three-peaks logic: momentum peak, then price peak, then profit peak; the short window is after the price peak while consensus still extrapolates the profit line. Run the EPS sensitivity (revenue ≈ P×Q on a fixed cost base) to show what a 30% ASP giveback does to consensus.
  • Structural obsolescence with a levered balance sheet — the debt turns a slow decline into an event (refinancing wall = your catalyst, check maturities via xbrl_fact_trends/filings).
  • Pure valuation shorts ("it's at 40× sales") are the weakest class — they require the multiple to compress on schedule, which is a timing bet with no timer.

2. The catalyst. "Being early is being wrong" is the short seller's first law — overvalued names can double while you wait, and the borrow bill runs the whole time. Catalysts that qualify: refinancing wall inside 12–18 months, covenant proximity, lockup expiry (supply), guidance that can't be walked up, auditor/CFO departure, index deletion, regulatory decision with a date. Check filing_timeline, equity_overview (earnings dates), lockup terms via web. No catalyst inside the horizon → the honest output is "right thesis, no trade yet — here are the tripwires to watch" (and write them into the plan file as watch items).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
