node-inspect-debugger

node-inspect-debugger is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from HezaoHezao/poirot. It costs 18 tokens per session (931 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to debugging Node.js programs with Node’s built-in inspector and Chrome DevTools Protocol. It lets you pause execution, set breakpoints, inspect call stacks and variables, and evaluate expressions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to step through Node.js code, examine variables and scopes, debug tests or crashes, and collect CPU profiles or heap snapshots.
Why use it?
It helps investigate failures or incorrect state that simple logging cannot clearly show, including values hidden inside closures and running-process behavior.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00018 $0.00931
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00465
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00186
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00093

Security

Grade A, and why

node-inspect-debugger scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Node.js Inspect Debugger

Overview

When console.log isn't enough, drive Node's built-in V8 inspector programmatically from the terminal. Real breakpoints, step in/over/out, call-stack walking, scope dumps, and arbitrary expression evaluation.

Prefer node inspect first. It's always available and the REPL is fast.

When to Use

  • A Node test fails and you need to see intermediate state
  • A Node process crashes or behaves wrong and you want to inspect state
  • You need to inspect a value in a closure that console.log can't reach
  • Perf: attach to a running process to capture a CPU profile or heap snapshot

Don't use for: things console.log solves in under a minute.

Quick Reference: node inspect REPL

Launch paused on first line:

node inspect path/to/script.js
# or with tsx
node --inspect-brk $(which tsx) path/to/script.ts

The debug> prompt accepts:

Command Action
c continue
n next line (step over)
s step into
o step out
sb('file.js', line) set breakpoint
cb('file.js', line) clear breakpoint
watch('expr') watch expression
exec('expr') evaluate in paused frame
backtrace / bt show call stack
list(N) show N lines around current

Scriptable CDP via chrome-remote-interface

For automated debugging (many breakpoints, collect state across runs):

# Install
npm install chrome-remote-interface

# Launch node with inspect
node --inspect-brk=9229 path/to/script.js &

# Attach via script
node -e "
const CDP = require('chrome-remote-interface');
(async () => {
  const client = await CDP({port: 9229});
  const {Debugger, Runtime} = client;
  await Debugger.enable();
  await Runtime.enable();
  Debugger.paused(({callFrames}) => {
    console.log('Paused at:', callFrames[0].location);
    // Inspect scope, evaluate expressions, etc.
  });
  // Set breakpoint
  await Debugger.setBreakpointByUrl({lineNumber: 10, url: 'file:///path/to/script.js'});
  await Debugger.resume();
})();
"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

node-inspect-debugger is a skill published in the GitHub repository HezaoHezao/poirot (215 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 931 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
