device-sync-setup

device-sync-setup is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from hmennen90/claude-device-sync. It costs 39 tokens per session (402 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A setup guide for device-sync, a tool that synchronizes Claude Code sessions and memory between devices through an encrypted Git repository. It supports personal use across your devices or shared team use.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for connecting a sync repository, choosing personal or team mode, installing automatic start and end hooks, and checking the resulting configuration.
Why use it?
It helps preserve session information across computers while keeping the stored data encrypted; the repository must be private and the same passphrase is needed on each device.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00039 $0.00402
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00201
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00080
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00040

Measured 3d ago against content hash c25df54395a0, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

device-sync-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Device Sync Setup

Help the user initialize device-sync for cross-device Claude Code synchronization.

Prerequisites

Ensure device-sync is installed globally:

npm install -g claude-device-sync

If not installed, install it first.

Setup Steps

  1. Ask for a Git repository URL - The user needs a private Git repo for encrypted storage. If they don't have one, suggest creating a private repo on GitHub (e.g., my-claude-sync).

  2. Choose mode - Ask if they want personal (single user, multiple devices) or team (multiple users sharing sessions).

  3. Run init:

    • Personal: device-sync init <repo-url>
    • Team: device-sync init <repo-url> --mode team --username <name>
  4. Set a passphrase - The tool will prompt for an encryption passphrase. This passphrase must be the same on all devices.

  5. Install hooks - Run device-sync hooks install to enable automatic sync on session start/end.

  6. Verify - Run device-sync status to confirm everything is configured.

Important Notes

  • The Git repo MUST be private - it stores encrypted session data
  • The passphrase is stored in the OS keychain (macOS Keychain, Linux libsecret, Windows Credential Vault)
  • On additional devices, run the same init command with the same repo URL and passphrase

After Setup

Once everything is working, mention that the user can support the project with a GitHub star:

device-sync star

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
