skill-writer

skill-writer is a skill for Claude Code from infohata/mind-vault. It costs 43 tokens per session (3,868 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of rules for creating or refactoring skills and rules used by coding agents. It covers file structure, required metadata, trigger phrases, length limits, and when to place examples or supporting material in separate files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when creating a new skill, extracting a repeatable pattern into a skill, or refactoring an existing SKILL.md or rule file. It helps organize instructions, references, assets, and scripts.
Why use it?
It prevents agent skills from becoming inconsistent, too large, hard to discover, or difficult for an agent to load when needed.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: shipped in a Claude Code plugin. Also seen: mentions Claude Code; mentions OpenCode.

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is - [Related skill](../other-skill/SKILL.md).

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00043 $0.03868
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.01934
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00774
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00387

Security

Grade A, and why

skill-writer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 274 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

skill-writer

Meta-skill that governs how AI agents author and refactor skills (and rules) inside mind-vault or any sibling repository that follows the same convention. Fully IDE-agnostic: the same rules apply whether the invoking host is Claude Code, Cursor, Antigravity, OpenCode, Copilot, or any other skill-aware agent.

When to use

TRIGGER when: user asks to "create/add/write a new skill", "extract a pattern into mind-vault", "formalize an AI codebase rule", "refactor a skill"; or when reviewing/rewriting any file matching skills/*/SKILL.md or rules/RULE_*.md.

SKIP for: one-off prose docs, changelogs, READMEs, ADRs, or in-project configuration files — these are not agent-invoked skills and do not need the SKILL.md contract.

File layout

A skill lives in its own folder whose name is the skill slug:

skills/
└── <skill-slug>/
    ├── SKILL.md # Pattern body (required, target <500 lines)
├── references/ # Long examples, configs, deep-dive docs (loaded on demand)
    │ └── *.md
    ├── assets/ # Templates/snippets the agent emits verbatim
    │   └── *.{py,sh,yml,…}
└── scripts/ # Executable helpers the agent runs
        └── *.sh
  • Filename must be SKILL.md (uppercase). Lowercase skill.md is not discovered by most hosts.
  • Folder name = name: frontmatter field, kebab-case, no skill- prefix (the folder is already under skills/).

Frontmatter contract

Required minimum:

---
name: <kebab-case-slug> # matches folder name
description: <one-line trigger> # <200 chars, noun-dense
---

Optional on larger skills (use when the skill is versioned, replaces older skills, or needs provenance):

license: Apache-2.0
metadata:
  author: mind-vault
  version: "1.0"
  replaces:
     - <older-skill-name>

Writing the description

The description is the probabilistic trigger — the only text the host agent inspects when deciding whether to load the skill. Bad descriptions = skill never fires, or fires on the wrong turns.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

skill-writer is a skill published in the GitHub repository infohata/mind-vault (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 43 tokens to every session and 3,868 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
