gai-cli

gai-cli is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ItamarZand88/CLI-Anything-WEB. It costs 75 tokens per session (526 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command-line tool for Google AI Mode, Google's search experience that returns an AI-written answer with linked sources. It also supports follow-up questions in the same search session.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to ask questions, receive cited answers, extract the source links, and ask related follow-up questions.
Why use it?
It provides a quick answer with source links without requiring a developer to operate the web interface manually. Follow-up questions let the conversation continue with the same context.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00075 $0.00526
Opus 5 $0.00037 $0.00263
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00105
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00053

Measured 5d ago against content hash 7754fde791fb, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

gai-cli scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

cli-web-gai

Google AI Mode search: AI answers with source references, rendered through headless Playwright (Chromium). Install: pip install cli-web-gai, then playwright install chromium.

Commands

  • search ask QUERY — submit a question. Options: --lang CODE (response language, e.g. en, he, de; default en), --timeout SECONDS (default 30), --headed (show the browser window, e.g. to solve a CAPTCHA)
  • search followup QUERY — follow-up in the same conversation; requires a prior ask in the same session

Examples

# Ask a question — returns answer + sources
cli-web-gai search ask "What is quantum computing?" --json

# Extract just the source URLs
cli-web-gai search ask "best static site generators" --json | \
  python3 -c "import json,sys; [print(s['url']) for s in json.load(sys.stdin)['data']['sources']]"

# Answer in another language
cli-web-gai search ask "What is machine learning?" --lang he --json

# Follow-up (same session only)
cli-web-gai search followup "How is it used in cryptography?" --json

JSON output

Add --json for structured output: {"success": true, "data": {query, answer, sources: [{title, url, snippet}], follow_up_prompt}}. Errors: {"error": true, "code": "...", "message": "..."}.

Utilities

cli-web-gai doctor [--json] diagnoses local setup. cli-web-gai mcp-serve exposes the commands as MCP tools over stdio. Running with no subcommand opens a REPL with ask / followup shortcuts.

Agent tips

  • Google rate-limits headless browsers; space out queries. If a CAPTCHA appears, rerun with --headed and solve it manually.
  • Conversation threading (followup) only persists within a single CLI session, not across invocations.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

gai-cli is a skill published in the GitHub repository ItamarZand88/CLI-Anything-WEB (215 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 75 tokens to every session and 526 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
