data-lake-architecture

data-lake-architecture is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from j4flmao/agent-skills. It costs 170 tokens per session (1,652 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to large-scale data architecture, including data lakes, warehouses, and lakehouses. It explains how storage, processing, raw data, cleaned data, and aggregated data fit together using systems such as S3, Kafka, Spark, and Databricks.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for designing batch and streaming pipelines, separating computing from storage, organizing bronze/silver/gold layers, and comparing warehouses with data lakes and lakehouses.
Why use it?
It helps choose an architecture that balances storage cost, query speed, updates, and data volume. It also makes the flow from source systems to usable datasets easier to plan.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00170 $0.01652
Opus 5.5 $0.00068 $0.00661
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00034 $0.00330
Haiku 4.5 $0.00017 $0.00165

Security

Grade A, and why

data-lake-architecture scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Data Lake Architecture

Purpose

Decide where analytical data lives and how it is laid out so that it stays cheap, queryable by several engines, governed, and does not turn into a "data swamp". Modern designs keep data in open formats (Parquet + an open table format) on object storage, with a catalog and access control, and attach compute engines as needed.

Agent Protocol

Trigger

"data lake", "lake vs warehouse", "lakehouse", "s3/gcs/adls layout", "bronze/silver/gold", "medallion", "partitioning", "small files", "iceberg vs delta vs hudi", "storage-compute separation".

Input Context

  • Sources (OLTP/CDC, events, files, SaaS), volumes and growth, latency needs (batch, hourly, near real time).
  • Consumers: BI, data science/ML, reverse ETL, external sharing.
  • Cloud/vendor constraints, existing warehouse, governance/compliance (PII, residency, deletion requests).

Output Artifact

Architecture decision + layer definitions + layout conventions + engine/catalog choice. No file unless requested.

Response Format

Pattern: {warehouse|lake|lakehouse} because {reason}
Storage: {bucket layout} format={Parquet + Iceberg/Delta/Hudi}
Layers: bronze={...} silver={...} gold={...}
Catalog/governance: {catalog, access control, PII handling}
Engines: {Spark/Trino/Flink/warehouse}

Completion Criteria

  • Decision recorded with alternatives (ADR).
  • Every table has an owner, layer, partition spec and retention.
  • PII identified and access-controlled; deletion path exists (GDPR/CCPA).
  • File sizing/compaction plan to avoid small files.

Warehouse vs Lake vs Lakehouse

Warehouse Data lake (files only) Lakehouse (open table format)
Storage Managed, proprietary Object storage, raw files Object storage, Parquet + table metadata
Schema On write On read On write with schema evolution
Transactions / updates Yes No (rewrite files) Yes: ACID commits, MERGE/UPDATE/DELETE, time travel
Engines The warehouse Many, inconsistent Many engines on the same tables
Best for BI-centric teams, SQL-only, low ops Raw archive, ML on unstructured data Mixed BI + ML + streaming at scale, avoiding lock-in
Many organizations combine them: lakehouse for raw/curated layers, warehouse (which now often reads Iceberg/Delta directly) for serving.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

data-lake-architecture is a skill published in the GitHub repository j4flmao/agent-skills (38 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 170 tokens to every session and 1,652 once invoked, about $0.0007 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
