cloud-native-event-driven-scaling

cloud-native-event-driven-scaling is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from j4flmao/agent-skills. It costs 144 tokens per session (1,744 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to scaling Kubernetes workloads from events such as queue length or Kafka lag. KEDA connects these external signals to Kubernetes autoscaling and can scale a workload down to zero.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure KEDA, scale Kafka or queue consumers, prevent rapid scale changes, and handle long-running jobs safely.
Why use it?
CPU and memory usage do not always show how much event-driven work is waiting. Event-based scaling helps match worker capacity to queued work.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00144 $0.01744
Opus 5.5 $0.00058 $0.00698
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00029 $0.00349
Haiku 4.5 $0.00014 $0.00174

Security

Grade A, and why

cloud-native-event-driven-scaling scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Event-Driven Scaling with KEDA

Purpose

CPU-based HPA reacts late to queue backlogs and cannot scale from zero. KEDA feeds event-source metrics to the HPA and handles 0↔1 activation itself, so consumers scale with work waiting rather than with CPU after the fact.

Agent Protocol

Trigger

"keda", "scale to zero", "ScaledObject", "ScaledJob", "scale on queue length", "kafka consumer autoscaling", "sqs scaling", "event driven autoscaling", "TriggerAuthentication".

Input Context

  • Event source and auth model (IRSA/EKS Pod Identity, Workload Identity, secrets).
  • Per-pod throughput (messages/s) and acceptable backlog drain time.
  • Message processing duration (seconds vs hours).

Output Artifact

ScaledObject/ScaledJob + TriggerAuthentication YAML. No file unless requested.

Response Format

Resource: {ScaledObject|ScaledJob} (why)
Trigger: {type} target={value} activation={value}
Replicas: min={n} max={n} (max bounded by {partitions|downstream limit})
Flapping control: {cooldownPeriod, HPA behavior}
Auth: {TriggerAuthentication / ClusterTriggerAuthentication}

Completion Criteria

  • Target value derived from per-pod throughput, not guessed.
  • maxReplicaCount bounded by partitions or downstream capacity.
  • Long-running work uses ScaledJob or graceful termination.

How KEDA Works

  • keda-operator: watches ScaledObjects, polls scalers every pollingInterval (default 30 s), creates/owns an HPA, and performs activation (scales 0→1 when the metric exceeds activationThreshold/activation* value, and 1→0 after cooldownPeriod, default 300 s, with no activity).
  • keda-operator-metrics-apiserver: implements the Kubernetes External Metrics API (external.metrics.k8s.io); the HPA queries it for 1↔N scaling.
  • KEDA does not replace the HPA — scaling between 1 and N is the regular HPA algorithm: desired = ceil(current × currentMetric / target); for AverageValue external metrics this is effectively ceil(totalMetric / target).
  • Only one external metrics server can be registered per cluster; KEDA conflicts with other adapters (e.g. prometheus-adapter for external metrics).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
