Getting it into your agent
One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

What it costs to keep this loaded
Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.
| Model | Per session | Once invoked |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $0.00167 | $0.01776 |
| Opus 5.5 | $0.00067 | $0.00710 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $0.00033 | $0.00355 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $0.00017 | $0.00178 |
Grade A, and why
istio-envoy-service-mesh-mechanics scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 112 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.
Istio and Envoy: Data-Plane Mechanics
Purpose
Most mesh problems (traffic bypassing the proxy, 503s with UF/NR flags, mTLS failures, latency) are explained by how packets get redirected and how Envoy's configuration was pushed. This skill covers both sidecar and ambient data planes and the commands to inspect them.
Agent Protocol
Trigger
"istio internals", "envoy xds", "sidecar injection", "iptables redirect", "ambient mode", "ztunnel", "waypoint", "istio-cni", "proxy-config", "mesh overhead".
Input Context
- Istio version and data-plane mode (sidecar or ambient), CNI in use.
- Failing request path (source workload → destination service, port, protocol).
- Envoy response flags / access logs.
Output Artifact
Explanation + diagnostic commands + config fix. No file unless requested.
Response Format
Mode: {sidecar|ambient (ztunnel only)|ambient + waypoint}
Path: {app -> redirect -> proxy -> upstream}
Finding: {listener/route/cluster/endpoint/cert issue}
Commands: {istioctl ...}
Fix: {resource change}
Completion Criteria
- Traffic path identified for the specific mode.
- Root cause tied to a concrete Envoy config object or redirect rule.
Control Plane → Envoy (xDS)
Istiod watches Kubernetes (Services, EndpointSlices, Istio CRDs) and pushes config to proxies over a gRPC xDS stream (Aggregated Discovery Service, delta xDS by default in recent releases):
| xDS | Object | Istio source |
|---|---|---|
| LDS | Listeners (ports, filter chains) | Services, Sidecar resource, Gateways |
| RDS | HTTP route tables | VirtualService / HTTPRoute |
| CDS | Upstream clusters (LB, TLS, circuit breaking) | DestinationRule |
| EDS | Endpoints (pod IPs, locality, health) | EndpointSlices |
| SDS | Certificates/keys | Istiod CA (SPIFFE identities) |
Envoy runs a main thread (xDS, admin) plus worker threads, each running its own event loop over accepted connections; config changes are applied without restarting.
Sidecar Mode Interception
- Injection adds
istio-proxy(and historicallyistio-init, which needsNET_ADMIN). With istio-cni, the CNI plugin programs redirection instead, so app pods need no elevated init container. - iptables
natrules (chainsISTIO_INBOUND,ISTIO_REDIRECT,ISTIO_OUTPUT):- outbound app traffic → Envoy port 15001 (virtualOutbound listener),
- inbound traffic → 15006 (virtualInbound listener),
- traffic from the proxy's own UID (1337) is excluded to avoid loops.
- Other ports: 15000 admin, 15020 merged metrics/health, 15021 health, 15090 Envoy Prometheus stats.
- Exclusions:
traffic.sidecar.istio.io/excludeOutboundPorts,excludeOutboundIPRangesannotations. - Startup race: app sends traffic before Envoy is ready → set
holdApplicationUntilProxyStarts: true(or native sidecar mode,ENABLE_NATIVE_SIDECARS).
What ships with it
1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

istio-envoy-service-mesh-mechanics is a skill published in the GitHub repository j4flmao/agent-skills (38 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 167 tokens to every session and 1,776 once invoked, about $0.0007 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
