Anti-Pattern: "Just Add More Alerts"
Every reliability decision goes through this process. A new alert, an incident postmortem, a performance issue — all of them. Adding alerts without understanding the system's failure modes creates noise, not reliability. The analysis can be short, but you MUST understand the system first.
Checklist
You MUST complete these steps in order:
- Understand system architecture — components, dependencies, data flow, failure domains
- Assess current reliability posture — existing monitoring, SLOs, incident history, known weaknesses
- Ask clarifying questions — one at a time, understand scale, traffic patterns, business criticality
- Identify failure modes — what can go wrong, how likely, what's the impact
- Propose 2-3 approaches — with trade-offs on coverage, cost, operational burden
- Present recommendation — structured analysis with implementation plan, get alignment
- Define success criteria — how to measure if reliability actually improved
