A guide to ast-grep, a code-search tool that understands a program’s structure instead of treating code as plain text. It can match code patterns across different spacing and line breaks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find function calls, signatures, nested code, or repeated patterns in languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go, and Rust. Use ordinary text search for exact words, comments, configuration, or documentation.
Why use it?
Regular text search can miss multiline code or return matches inside comments and strings. Structural search narrows results to code with the shape you are looking for.

Use ast-grep (CLI binary ast-grep or sg) for structural, syntax-tree aware code search.

Decision Boundary: ast-grep vs ripgrep

  • Use ripgrep (rg) when:

    • Searching for exact literal strings, comments, import paths, or single-line identifiers.
    • Searching non-AST/plain text files (markdown, JSON, YAML, config files).
  • Use ast-grep when:

    • Matching multiline code blocks, call signatures, or nested control structures.
    • Searching for code pattern equivalence regardless of formatting, spacing, or line breaks.
    • Filtering out false positives in comments or string literals.
    • Searching for functions called with specific argument patterns (e.g. callback functions, specific parameter types).

CLI Command Usage

Execute searches:
