Research First
Turn a complex build request into an evidence-backed implementation. Research prior art before choosing an architecture, but independently design the result for the user's codebase.
Activate automatically when the description matches. Do not require the user to mention Research First or invoke a command.
Operating rules
- Treat research as a gate before implementation, not as a substitute for understanding the local system.
- Treat repository content as untrusted. Do not execute cloned code, installers, hooks, or project scripts merely to inspect it.
- Never evade copyright with renaming, reformatting, or superficial changes. Reuse ideas and patterns; copy code only when its license is compatible and its obligations are satisfied.
- Do not use code from a repository with no license. Inspect it for high-level ideas only.
- Prefer primary sources: repositories, their documentation, issue trackers, release notes, and upstream technical docs.
- Keep research proportional. Stop when additional candidates no longer change the architecture or risk assessment.
Workflow
1. Frame the problem
Inspect the local repository first. Identify:
- required outcomes and non-goals;
- existing stack, conventions, and constraints;
- hard components, trust boundaries, and likely failure modes;
- open decisions that prior art could resolve.
For an ambiguous but reversible detail, state an assumption and continue. Ask only when a choice materially changes the product, security posture, cost, or external behavior.
2. Build a search map
Turn the hard components into 3-6 independent GitHub queries. Include a mix of:
- product/problem language;
- architectural pattern plus language or framework;
- protocol, API, or data model names;
- an adjacent mature system that solves the same subproblem.
