changelog-generator

changelog-generator is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from JakubMikolajek/codex-skills-collection. It costs 38 tokens per session (1,001 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A process for creating user-facing CHANGELOG entries from git history, pull-request descriptions, or handoff notes. A changelog records what changed between software releases.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps prepare release notes, close sprints, start a missing CHANGELOG.md file, categorize changes using Keep a Changelog headings, and suggest a version bump.
Why use it?
It turns technical development records into organized release notes and reduces the chance that important user-visible changes are forgotten.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.01001
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00500
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00200
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00100

Security

Grade A, and why

changelog-generator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Changelog Generator

This skill provides a structured process for generating CHANGELOG entries in Keep a Changelog format. It supports three input modes (git log, PR descriptions, handoff documents) and enforces user-facing language, proper categorization, and version bump recommendations.

When to Use

  • Preparing a version release or tag
  • Closing a sprint and documenting what shipped
  • After session-handoff on tasks that produce user-facing changes
  • When CHANGELOG.md is missing and needs to be bootstrapped from history

When NOT to Use

  • Documenting internal refactors that do not affect public API or user experience
  • Task is a draft or work-in-progress with no shippable changes yet
  • User explicitly says "skip changelog"

Core Principles

Three Input Modes

Use the best available source:

  1. Git log modegit log --oneline [last-tag]..HEAD
  2. PR mode — PR titles and descriptions provided by user
  3. Handoff mode — reads .codex-handoff.md Status and Files Modified sections

Output Format

Strictly follow Keep a Changelog:

## [X.Y.Z] - YYYY-MM-DD

### Added
### Changed
### Deprecated
### Removed
### Fixed
### Security

Use ## [Unreleased] when version is not yet tagged. Omit empty sections.

Writing Rules

  • User-facing language only — "Added dark mode" not "feat: add dark-mode-toggle.tsx"
  • One line per change
  • Group related commits into one entry if they form a single feature
  • Never include internal refactors unless they affect public API or break existing behavior
  • Breaking changes: prefix entry with **BREAKING:**

Changelog Generation Process

Use the checklist below and track your progress:

Changelog progress:
- [ ] Step 1: Determine input mode
- [ ] Step 2: Collect raw change data
- [ ] Step 3: Categorize changes
- [ ] Step 4: Write user-facing entries
- [ ] Step 5: Determine version bump
- [ ] Step 6: Output CHANGELOG block

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

changelog-generator is a skill published in the GitHub repository JakubMikolajek/codex-skills-collection (5 stars, last pushed 7d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 1,001 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
