skill-creator

skill-creator is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from JakubMikolajek/codex-skills-collection. It costs 42 tokens per session (1,366 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide and scaffold for creating new SKILL.md files, which are instruction files that teach the coding agent how to handle a specific kind of task.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding a new capability, splitting an oversized skill, or connecting an existing skill to the routing tree.
Why use it?
It helps keep new skills consistent, avoid duplicate instructions, and ensure the agent can find them through the project’s routing files.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: mentions AGENTS.md; mentions Codex.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.01366
Opus 5 $0.00021 $0.00683
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00273
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00137

Security

Grade A, and why

skill-creator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Skill Creator

This skill provides a systematic process for creating new skills and integrating them into the routing tree. It enforces quality gates, prevents duplicates, and ensures every new skill is reachable from the root router (AGENTS.md).

Path convention: In this source repo, AGENTS.md and skills/ live at repo root. In bootstrapped target projects, they live inside .codex/. All skills/... paths below are relative to the directory containing AGENTS.md.

When to Use

  • User requests a new capability not covered by any existing skill
  • An existing skill is doing too many unrelated things and needs to be split
  • A new technology or framework needs dedicated skill coverage
  • Routing tree has a gap (skill exists but is unreachable from AGENTS.md)

When NOT to Use

  • Task merely uses an existing skill — do not enter this skill for normal skill consumption
  • Task is about editing skill content to fix a typo or update a rule — edit directly without scaffolding
  • Task is about reorganizing routing files without creating new skills — edit routing files directly

Core Principles

Audit Before Creating

  • Read all existing SKILL.md files before scaffolding anything
  • Search for partial coverage — a new skill may already exist under a different name
  • If overlap found: extend the existing skill, do not create a duplicate
  • Check the routing tree to confirm the gap is real, not a routing misconfiguration

Naming and Placement

  • Folder name: lowercase, hyphenated, technology or action-based (e.g. debug-trace, react-nextjs)
  • One skill = one folder = one SKILL.md
  • Determine domain branch before writing: FRONTEND / BACKEND / INFRA / DATA / WORKFLOW
  • Name by capability, not by implementation detail

Routing Must Be Updated in the Same Task

  • Never create a skill without updating the relevant routing branch file (e.g. skills/routing/WORKFLOW.md)
  • If the skill belongs to a stack sub-branch (e.g. skills/routing/REACT.md), update that file too
  • If no suitable sub-branch exists, evaluate whether to create one or attach directly to the domain branch
  • Verify reachability from AGENTS.md through the routing tree after updating

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

skill-creator is a skill published in the GitHub repository JakubMikolajek/codex-skills-collection (5 stars, last pushed 6d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 1,366 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
