sector-rotation

sector-rotation is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jamespud/yahoo-stock-mcp. It costs 80 tokens per session (1,068 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A comparison of the 11 broad GICS market sectors, represented by exchange-traded funds, against the SPY fund, which tracks the S&P 500. It ranks recent performance and shows the largest holdings in each sector.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to study sector rotation, compare one-day, five-day, and 20-day performance, measure differences between sectors, and inspect sector holdings.
Why use it?
It shows which sectors are leading or lagging relative to the wider US large-company market. It also connects a sector result to the companies that have the largest weights in it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00080 $0.01068
Opus 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00427
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00214
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00107

Security

Grade A, and why

sector-rotation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Sector rotation

Read relative sector performance out of the stored sector ETFs (XLC..XLU plus the SPY benchmark) and name the constituents that carry each sector. The value here is the benchmark-relative view and the constituent weights, which a per-stock read cannot give you.

Read references/data-policy.md first, then the rotation playbook for relative-performance maths and the reporting shape.

MCP tools used

  • list_sectors - the sector catalog: 11 GICS sectors plus SPY, each with its ETF symbol and last bar date
  • get_sector_performance - the rotation view: latest price and 1d/5d/20d return per sector ETF, ranked, with the benchmark
  • get_sector_members - a sector ETF's largest constituent holdings and their weights
  • get_bars - ETF or benchmark bars, for windows the rotation view does not cover
  • sync_sectors - when the catalog, the ETF bars, or the constituents are missing or stale (its per-sector components are bars/yahooSummary/members)

Workflow

  1. Check the catalog and its freshness. Call list_sectors and read last_bar_date for each row. If the dates are missing or old, go to stock-data-setup; a rotation table built on stale ETF bars is misleading regardless of how it is presented.
  2. Pull the rotation view. Call get_sector_performance. Record asOf, the benchmark row, and the ranked sectors array.
  3. Compute the benchmark-relative numbers explicitly. The tool reports each sector's absolute return only; the relative figure (sector change - benchmark change, or the ratio) is yours to compute and label. Do not describe an absolute rise as "outperforming" without it.
  4. Check every row's own tradeDate. asOf is the newest bar date across the whole set. A sector whose own tradeDate is older is missing the latest session, so its change1d is not comparable with the rest. Say so instead of ranking it silently.
  5. Drill into the sectors that matter. Call get_sector_members for the leaders, the laggards, or the sector the user named, with a bounded limit.
  6. Extend the window only when asked. get_sector_performance covers 1/5/20 trading days. For anything else, pull the ETF and SPY with get_bars yourself and state the window you used.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

sector-rotation is a skill published in the GitHub repository jamespud/yahoo-stock-mcp (0 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 80 tokens to every session and 1,068 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-28.
