markitdown-python

A file-conversion workflow that turns documents and other media into Markdown, a plain-text format commonly used for documentation. It uses Microsoft's MarkItDown tool and supports formats including PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, images, audio, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML, ZIP, YouTube URLs, and EPUBs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to extract text from files, convert documents to Markdown, and prepare content for summarizing or automated processing.
Why use it?
It makes content from many file types easier for developers and other tools to read, search, and process as text. It also checks whether the conversion tool is installed before setting it up.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00101 $0.01516
Opus 5 $0.00051 $0.00758
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00303
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00152

Security

Grade A, and why

markitdown-python scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/convert_to_markdown.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

MarkItDown Skill

Convert various file formats to Markdown using microsoft/markitdown.

Pre-Check

Before converting any file, follow this check sequence:

Step 1: Check if markitdown is already in PATH

# Windows
Get-Command markitdown -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
# macOS / Linux
which markitdown || command -v markitdown

If found → skip to Usage.

Step 2: Check if markitdown exists in ~/.venv

# Windows
Test-Path "$env:USERPROFILE\.venv\Scripts\markitdown.exe"
# macOS / Linux
test -f ~/.venv/bin/markitdown && echo "found"

If found → add to PATH for this session, then proceed to Usage:

# Windows
$env:PATH = "$env:USERPROFILE\.venv\Scripts;$env:PATH"
# macOS / Linux
export PATH="$HOME/.venv/bin:$PATH"

Step 3: Install (only if Steps 1 and 2 both failed)

# Windows
python -m venv "$env:USERPROFILE\.venv"
& "$env:USERPROFILE\.venv\Scripts\pip" install "markitdown[all]"
$env:PATH = "$env:USERPROFILE\.venv\Scripts;$env:PATH"
# macOS / Linux
python3 -m venv ~/.venv
~/.venv/bin/pip install "markitdown[all]"
export PATH="$HOME/.venv/bin:$PATH"

Installation Location

MarkItDown is installed in a dedicated venv at ~/.venv:

Platform Executable pip
Windows ~\.venv\Scripts\markitdown.exe ~\.venv\Scripts\pip.exe
macOS / Linux ~/.venv/bin/markitdown ~/.venv/bin/pip

Supported Formats

  • PDF
  • PowerPoint (.pptx)
  • Word (.docx)
  • Excel (.xlsx, .xls)
  • Images (EXIF metadata, OCR with plugin)
  • Audio (EXIF metadata, speech transcription)
  • HTML
  • Text-based formats (CSV, JSON, XML)
  • ZIP files (iterates over contents)
  • YouTube URLs
  • EPubs

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

markitdown-python is a skill published in the GitHub repository Jansen611/Agent-Skills (2 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 101 tokens to every session and 1,516 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
