risk-gauge

risk-gauge is a skill for Claude Code from jaredlangleycc/nightshift-os. It costs 129 tokens per session (3,099 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A business decision check for proposed growth moves, such as hiring, advertising, raising prices, buying tools, or leaving a job. It compares the proposal with the limits the user previously set for money, time, and risk.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for reviewing expansion plans, new clients, contracts, debt, paid programs, and other decisions that spend money, time, or social goodwill.
Why use it?
It helps prevent committing resources based on an exciting guess that the user would have rejected after careful thought.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00129 $0.03099
Opus 5 $0.00064 $0.01550
Sonnet 5 $0.00026 $0.00620
Haiku 4.5 $0.00013 $0.00310

Security

Grade B, and why

risk-gauge scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Strips warnings and disclaimersmediumAnti-refusal

Omitting safety caveats hides risk from the user and is a common jailbreak preamble.

If the user overrides the gauge ("yes, I know it's over cap, I'm doing it anyway"), log it via decision-logger and move on. Do not lecture, do not repeat the warning, do not add passive aggression.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 257 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Risk Gauge

The user wrote down what they would and would not bet, in their own words, on the day they took the assessment. Risk-gauge holds them to that bar when a shiny opportunity tries to walk through the door.

Solopreneurs with a day job, a partner, and kids cannot afford to discover six months later that they bet the runway on a hunch they would have rejected sober. This skill is the sober voice.

When this skill triggers

Fire whenever the user proposes any of the following, whether in passing or as a deliberate plan:

  • Hire a contractor, VA, agency, or full-time person
  • Spend money on paid ads (Meta, LinkedIn, Google, podcast sponsorship)
  • Launch a new offer alongside the current one
  • Raise prices on existing offers
  • Buy a paid SaaS tool above their stated monthly cap
  • Sign a contract longer than one quarter
  • Quit the day job (or cut day-job hours)
  • Take on a client whose hours would exceed their stated weekly cap
  • Move from free tier to paid on any tool when the free path has not been documented as broken
  • Commit to a conference, retreat, or paid program over $500
  • Take on debt or open a line of credit for the business

Also fire when another skill (business-coach, copywriting, outreach-drafter, paid-ads, pricing-strategy) is about to recommend something the user's caps would block.

The risk archetypes

Read the user's risk archetype from CLAUDE.md. Four archetypes, derived in customize-from-assessment from Section 10:

Bootstrap-Strict

Free-first is non-negotiable. Tool spend cap typically under $50/mo. Will not take debt. Day job is non-negotiable until revenue covers it twice over. The user has likely been burned before, or has a young family, or both.

Posture: every paid move requires a documented broken free path. Default answer to expansion is "not yet, what's the free path?"

Low-Burn

Free-first as a strong preference. Tool spend cap typically $50 to $200/mo. Will not take debt. Day job stays until business covers expenses plus margin.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

risk-gauge is a skill published in the GitHub repository jaredlangleycc/nightshift-os (3 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 129 tokens to every session and 3,099 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (strips warnings and disclaimers). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
