workspace-patterns

workspace-patterns is a skill for Claude Code from Jartan-LLC/grimoire. It costs 52 tokens per session (958 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A file and folder convention for an agent's private work notes, plans, research, reviews, and saved state. It keeps these files under `.claude/workspace/`, separate from the project's source code and commits.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps organize plans, research, review notes, and resumable state by task and branch. It also defines where files belong when working inside or outside Git.
Why use it?
It prevents temporary agent files from cluttering the project or being committed accidentally. It also gives ongoing work a consistent place to resume from, including work done in Git worktrees.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00052 $0.00958
Opus 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00383
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00192
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00096

Security

Grade B, and why

workspace-patterns scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Workspace Patterns

Working files are what you write for yourself and the user while you work: plans, research, reviews, notes, state to resume from. They are not project files, and no commit carries them.

Where the project's own rules say otherwise, follow them.

The workspace

  • The workspace is .claude/workspace/ in the main checkout, also when you work in a worktree. In a linked worktree (git rev-parse --git-dir differs from --git-common-dir) the main checkout is the parent of git rev-parse --path-format=absolute --git-common-dir; anywhere else, submodules included, it is git rev-parse --show-toplevel. A worktree of a bare repository has no main checkout: ask the user where the workspace goes. A worktree's own .claude/workspace/ goes when the worktree does. Outside git, it is .claude/workspace/ in the project's root directory.
  • Every working file goes in the workspace, never in the project root or beside the code.

Layout

  • One folder per effort: issue-<n> when the work has an issue, otherwise a short name chosen when the work starts, such as a topic or the branch folder name.
  • In it, the effort's plan.md, research and notes, and one subfolder per branch for what belongs to that branch's change: the branch folder.
  • A branch folder is named for the branch with each / written as -- (feature/retry -> feature--retry). For a PR from a fork (isCrossRepository in gh pr view --json), whose branch name another fork can share (main, patch-1), the branch folder is pr-<n>.
  • Reviews of a branch are numbered by round in its subfolder: 1.md, 2.md, ... A new review takes the number after the highest (compare numbers, not names: 10.md follows 9.md) and leaves the earlier ones as they are.
  • pr.md in a branch folder is the PR title and description while the branch has no open PR: the title on its first line, the description after a blank line. Once the PR exists, the PR holds them.
  • cycle.md in a branch folder is the state of a review cycle on that branch, which praxis's review-cycle command writes and resumes from.
  • To find a branch's folder, look for one first: .claude/workspace/*/<branch folder>/. Failing that, make it in the folder of the issue the PR closes (gh pr view <n> --json closingIssuesReferences) or the work is for, and failing that, in a new effort folder.
  • Finished efforts move to .claude/workspace/archive/; look there when resuming old work.
  • When a file you expect is missing, look for one that serves before saying there is none: earlier versions of praxis's plan-issue and review-pr wrote plans as .claude/workspace/issue-<n>-plan.md and reviews as .claude/workspace/pr-<n>-review.md; look there too. Write new files only where this layout puts them.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

workspace-patterns is a skill published in the GitHub repository Jartan-LLC/grimoire (3 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 52 tokens to every session and 958 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (reads agent configuration directories). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-28.
