harness

harness is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jasonkneen/lazar. It costs 73 tokens per session (715 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A persistent store for reusable memories, skill pointers, prompt notes, and instructions for delegating work. It keeps a compact overview and can load full entries when needed.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to record durable facts, capture lessons from successes or failures, save narrow guidance, and store reusable subagent recipes.
Why use it?
It makes important lessons and procedures available across sessions without keeping everything in the active conversation.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00073 $0.00715
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.00358
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00143
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00072

Security

Grade A, and why

harness scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (harness.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Continual harness

Prime-agent-style persistent layer for lazar. One store, compact overview always injected by hooks/session-start.d/00-harness-overview.sh.

Paths

  • Global state: $LAZAR_HOME/memory/harness/state.json
  • History: $LAZAR_HOME/memory/harness/history.jsonl
  • Local (session): $LAZAR_HOME/memory/sessions/<id>/harness.json
  • CLI: python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py

Kinds

Kind Use for
memory Durable facts, prefs, pitfalls
skill Pointers to procedures / when-to-use a skill
prompt Narrow behavioral addenda (not full SOUL rewrites)
subagent Delegation recipes for lazar-spawn

Scope

  • global (default) — cross-session
  • local — this LAZAR_SESSION_ID only

Commands

# Compact overview (what session-start injects)
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py overview

# Record a lesson after success/failure
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py add \
  --kind memory \
  --title "short-slug" \
  --content "Specific actionable lesson" \
  --evidence "what happened"

# Load full entry; optional upvote
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py load M-never-cat-stream-log --helpful

python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py helpful <id>
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py unhelpful <id>
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py delete <id>

# First-time / refresh seed (+ import playbook + learnings)
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py seed
python3 $LAZAR_HOME/skills/_meta/harness/harness.py stats

Rules

  1. Smallest edit. One concrete lesson beats a paragraph dump.
  2. Evidence. Prefer --evidence when refining from a real failure/success.
  3. Global only if stable. Session-only progress → --scope local (needs session id).
  4. Do not duplicate. add skips near-duplicate content unless --force.
  5. Score usage. When an injected bullet actually helped, helpful <id>.
  6. Still write long provenance to memory/distilled/ if needed — harness holds the ranked actionable slice.

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
