docs-consolidate

docs-consolidate is a skill for Claude Code from jasonm4130/claude-skills. It costs 125 tokens per session (2,355 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A documentation audit that checks a code repository’s written guides for contradictions, outdated claims, unused pages, and unnecessary bulk. It reports issues for you to decide on; it does not rewrite the documents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review and spring-clean a repository’s documentation, either when its consolidation reminder appears or when you request an audit.
Why use it?
Documentation can become misleading as the code changes. This helps you find drift without allowing automatic edits to change important guidance incorrectly.

Written for Claude Code: ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT} variable. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions AGENTS.md.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00125 $0.02355
Opus 5 $0.00063 $0.01177
Sonnet 5 $0.00025 $0.00471
Haiku 4.5 $0.00013 $0.00235

Security

Grade A, and why

docs-consolidate scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 201 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Documentation consolidation

An audit, not a rewrite. It reports; you decide; only then does anything change.

Google's opendocs defines the audit archetype as inventory + analysis + recommendations, "explicitly excluding the writing or editing of docs based on those results". That separation is the point: LLM inconsistency detection is nowhere near reliable enough to edit unsupervised, and an autonomous rewrite would be confidently wrong at exactly the rate that matters.

This never blocks anything. If the user is mid-task, say what you found and let them come back to it.

--init

Adopt the trigger in this repo.

--init starts the clock; it does not audit. The audited= SHA it writes means "drift is measured from here", not "these docs were verified at this commit". Say that to the user when you run it, because the trigger will then stay silent for threshold − 1 commits over docs nobody has checked. If the repo's docs are of unknown quality, offer to run a full pass immediately after adopting.

  1. Refuse if the record would be ignored. git check-ignore .docs-sync matching means the file would never reach a teammate's clone — stop and say so rather than creating a record that silently does nothing. (This is what ruled out putting it under .claude/: transcoder gitignores that directory.)

  2. Write .docs-sync at the repo root:

    docs-sync: audited=<git rev-parse HEAD>
    Recorded: <ISO-8601 UTC>
    Run /docs-consolidate — do not hand-edit the audited= line.

The second line says Recorded, not "Last consolidation", and both --init and a re-stamp use the same wording. At adoption no consolidation has happened, so a line claiming one would be false in the file whose entire job is to not make false claims.

  3. Commit it. Then assert audited == git rev-parse HEAD~1 — the record names the commit whose tree was audited, which is the parent of the commit containing the record, because a file cannot carry the SHA of the commit that contains it.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
