apply-differentiated-reciprocity

apply-differentiated-reciprocity is a skill for Claude Code from jeffreytse/grimoire-core. It costs 79 tokens per session (1,974 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A decision framework for responding differently to harmful and helpful behaviour. It means answering wrongdoing with fair consequences and genuine kindness with kindness.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose fair responses to customer, partner, employee, or competitor actions.
Why use it?
It prevents both unchecked forgiveness, which removes accountability, and excessive retaliation, which can make conflicts worse.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00079 $0.01974
Opus 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00790
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00395
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00197

Security

Grade A, and why

apply-differentiated-reciprocity scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Apply Differentiated Reciprocity

Respond to a wrong with proportionate fairness — neither indiscriminate forgiveness that erodes accountability nor escalating retaliation that compounds the conflict — and respond to genuine kindness with kindness in kind, rather than applying the same response regardless of how you were actually treated.

Why This Is Best Practice

Origin: In the Analects (論語, Book 14, "Xian Wen"), a questioner asks Confucius about the popular notion of repaying a wrong with kindness (以德報怨) — essentially unconditional forgiveness toward those who wrong you. Confucius rejects this directly, asking: if a wrong is repaid with kindness, how then would genuine kindness itself be repaid? His stated position is a differentiated response: repay a wrong with 直 — proportionate directness, fairness, an undistorted response that is neither excessively lenient nor excessively harsh — and repay kindness with kindness (以德報德), reciprocating good treatment in kind. The teaching's structure is a deliberate rejection of two failure modes: indiscriminate leniency, which erodes the accountability that makes fair dealing sustainable, and (by the same logic) indiscriminate retaliation, which escalates conflict rather than resolving it.

Adopted by: Robert Axelrod's iterated-tournament research in The Evolution of Cooperation (1984) — a foundational, widely taught result in game theory — found that reciprocity-based strategies (respond to cooperation with cooperation, respond to defection with a proportionate, non-escalating response) systematically outperformed both unconditionally cooperative strategies, which are exploited by bad-faith actors, and unconditionally hostile strategies, which forfeit the sustained gains available from mutual cooperation. Nowak and Sigmund's later refinement (Nature, 1992/1993) found that strategies combining bounded forgiveness with continued responsiveness to a genuine pattern of wrongdoing ("generous tit-for-tat") are more stable over repeated interaction than strict, unforgiving retaliation.

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
