caretaker

caretaker is a skill for Claude Code from jezweb/vite-flare-starter. It costs 74 tokens per session (1,325 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A scheduled daily routine that rotates its focus across connections, routines, skills, memories, findings, and cross-cutting checks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for a morning sweep of system connections, automated routines, skills, memories, and operational findings, with a different focus each day.
Why use it?
It helps an agent regularly look for drift, unused resources, failures, expired credentials, and other maintenance issues.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00074 $0.01325
Opus 5 $0.00037 $0.00662
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00265
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00133

Security

Grade A, and why

caretaker scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Caretaker — daily rotating focus sweep

Catches drift before it becomes urgent. Provides "what to do today" so an agent always has real outward work — never coasts on "monitoring continues."

When this fires

Daily, once per day in the morning (recommended cadence: 06:00 user-local). Different from heartbeat / reactive cycles — caretaker is one focused outward sweep per day.

Wire as a routine targeting AssistantAgent with loadSkills: ['caretaker'] and cron: '0 6 * * *' (or local equivalent).

The rotation

Each day-of-week gets a different focus. Adapted to the entities and modules in vite-flare-starter:

Day Focus What to do
Mon Connections Walk mcp_connections rows. Any expired tokens? Any unused for 14+ days? Any test connections leaked into prod? Surface as findings.
Tue Routines Walk routines table via list_routines. Any routines that errored 3+ times this week? Any with no runs at all? Any whose lastRunCost exceeds budget? Surface findings.
Wed Skills Walk skills via list_skills. Any skills not loaded in 30+ days (check tool-usage stats)? Any skills with descriptions missing "Use when…"? Surface as findings.
Thu Memories memory_search for memories older than 90d with low recall_count. Candidates for archive. Surface count + IDs as a finding.
Fri Findings audit Walk findings with status='open' older than 30d. Stale opens are red flags — promote, dismiss, or extend explicitly.
Sat Cross-cutting Read findings across ALL agents this week. Look for cross-cutting patterns (same gotcha discovered by multiple agents). Promote shared patterns to learnings.
Sun Weekly summary Distil the week into one paragraph: what shipped, what landed, what's open, what's queued. Write to inbox via inbox_add with importance='medium'.

For non-developer agents, adapt the rotation to the agent's surface area (e.g. for a customer support agent: Mon=tickets / Tue=common asks / Wed=knowledge gaps / etc).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

caretaker is a skill published in the GitHub repository jezweb/vite-flare-starter (48 stars, last pushed 14d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 74 tokens to every session and 1,325 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
