new-spec

new-spec is a skill for Claude Code from jhlee0409/omni-harness-kit. It costs 82 tokens per session (398 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill that creates three planning files—specification, task plan, and working context—before substantial development work. It is intended for changes spanning multiple areas, several commits, or a new architecture decision record.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to scaffold a dated specification directory, document acceptance criteria, plan dependent tasks, and prepare work for later pickup.
Why use it?
It preserves the original request, orders the work, and records handoff context so implementation can resume without losing important decisions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00082 $0.00398
Opus 5 $0.00041 $0.00199
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00080
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00040

Security

Grade A, and why

new-spec scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (new-spec.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

new-spec

Structure non-trivial work before coding — the spec is what keeps the work grounded on the original ask (this is where reliability comes from, not from a measurement system).

  1. Decide if a spec is warranted. Yes if the task touches ≥2 modules / areas, needs ≥3 commits, introduces a new ADR, or is forward-only. Skip it for small work (single file, doc-only, a follow-up) — spec ceremony on tiny tasks is net-negative.
  2. Scaffold: run bash "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/skills/new-spec/new-spec.sh" "<name>" from the repo root. It creates specs/<date>-<slug>/{spec,plan,context}.md and prints the directory.
  3. Fill, in order: spec.md (the original ask verbatim + acceptance), plan.md (dependency-ordered tasks), then load the tasks and surface N/M as you work. A "done" tone before all plan tasks are consumed is not allowed.
  4. context.md ## 0. Resume here — write it with /harness-kit:handoff at a stopping point; a fresh session resumes from it with /harness-kit:pickup.
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

new-spec is a skill published in the GitHub repository jhlee0409/omni-harness-kit (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 82 tokens to every session and 398 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
