platformio-mcp: Skill for Claude Code

.skills/platformio-dashboard/SKILL.md

platformio-dashboard is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jl-codes/platformio-mcp. It costs 47 tokens per session (850 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for opening and using the PIO Agent dashboard, a visual interface for projects, devices, logs, approvals, tasks, locks, and monitoring state. It is intended for interactive use rather than unattended runs.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for viewing PlatformIO projects and device activity, inspecting logs, handling approvals and tasks, and monitoring state.
Why use it?
It provides a visual way to inspect and control PlatformIO agent work instead of relying only on commands or raw tool output.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: mentions Codex.

This is jl-codes/platformio-mcp's own configuration. It tells Claude Code and Codex how to work on platformio-mcp itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything platformio-mcp configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00047 $0.00850
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00340
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00170
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00085

Security

Grade A, and why

platformio-dashboard scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 25d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 62 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

PIO Agent Dashboard

Reading results: a non-zero exit means look at BOTH streams. An operation that ran but failed (a build with errors) puts success: false on stdout; one that could not run (bad arguments, policy, a busy port) puts errorType on stderr with stdout empty. Capture both (--json 2>&1). See the pio-manager skill for the full contract.

Use the existing dashboard as an interactive human-control surface. The dashboard is a long-lived HTTP server, so the agent must never start one itself. The pio-agent CLI remains the execution API and the fallback when a browser is unavailable.

Workflow

  1. Resolve the exact project directory from the active workspace or ask for it when multiple PlatformIO projects are plausible.

  2. If the host already has a PIO Agent MCP session (Tier 2 in pio-manager) and can render MCP Apps, call open_pio_agent_panel with that projectDir. Its native conversation panel covers project inspection, connected devices, policy, locks, pending approval summaries, monitor status, recent tasks, bounded logs, and builds without any HTTP server.

  3. Otherwise run pio-agent dashboard --json to check whether a dashboard is already running.

  4. If one is running, open it. When the Codex in-app browser is available, open the URL in a right-side panel and reuse the current PIO Agent dashboard tab when the host provides a tab identifier; never ask for the operating system's default browser. If no in-app browser is available, give the user one labeled clickable link and say which UI capability is unavailable — do not claim the page opened. Only when the dashboard is already online may you call get_dashboard_url with open: false for an authenticated launch URL: that tool boots a server on demand otherwise.

  5. If none is running, do not start one. Tell the user to run:

    pio-agent dashboard --serve

and wait for them to confirm. The dashboard is a long-lived HTTP server; only the user decides to start it.

  6. Never run pio-agent dashboard --serve yourself, and never background it.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

platformio-dashboard is a skill published in the GitHub repository jl-codes/platformio-mcp (54 stars, last pushed 16d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 47 tokens to every session and 850 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-08.
