article-summarizer

article-summarizer is a skill for Claude Code from jlaska/obsidian-claude-plugins. It costs 32 tokens per session (3,277 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool that fetches a web article, summarizes its main points, and saves the result as a reference note in an Obsidian vault. Obsidian is a note-taking app that stores linked Markdown files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create searchable article notes, capture key takeaways, and connect an article with related material in your vault.
Why use it?
It removes the need to read and manually record every article, while helping relate new ideas to existing notes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.03277
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.01639
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00655
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00328

Security

Grade A, and why

article-summarizer scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (fetch_article.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Article Summary

Fetches a web article, generates a concise summary with key takeaways and vault connections, and saves a structured reference note to the Obsidian vault's REFERENCES/ folder.

When to Use

Invoke /article-summarizer <url> when you want to:

  • Capture a web article as a reference note in your vault
  • Get a concise summary and key takeaways without reading the full piece
  • Connect an article's ideas to existing notes in your vault
  • Build a searchable library of articles and their learnings

Workflow

1. Discover Vault Root

Read Obsidian configuration to find the active vault:

cat ~/Library/Application\ Support/obsidian/obsidian.json

Parse the JSON to find the vault with "open": true, or use the most recently opened vault. Extract vault_root from the path field.

2. Fetch Article Content and Metadata

Fetch the article in two passes using WebFetch:

Pass A — metadata extraction (structured JSON):

WebFetch(url, prompt="Extract from this article: 1) the article title, 2) author name(s) — omit if not found, 3) publication date in YYYY-MM-DD format — omit if not found, 4) the site or publication name (e.g. 'The Atlantic', 'hbr.org'). Return ONLY a JSON object with keys: title, author, published, source. Use empty string for any field not found.")

Pass B — full article content (clean markdown):

WebFetch(url, prompt="Extract the main article content as clean markdown. Remove navigation menus, ads, sidebars, footers, cookie notices, social sharing buttons, related articles widgets, and comments sections. Preserve the article's headings, body paragraphs, lists, blockquotes, code blocks, and emphasis. Return only the article content.")

Then run the Python script to create the skeleton note:

python3 skills/article-summarizer/fetch_article.py "<vault_root>" "<url>" \
  --title "<title>" \
  --author "<author>" \
  --published "<published>" \
  --source "<source>"

The script outputs JSON to stdout:

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

article-summarizer is a skill published in the GitHub repository jlaska/obsidian-claude-plugins (2 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 32 tokens to every session and 3,277 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
