backend-design

backend-design is a skill for Claude Code from joao-aires/agent-skills-public. It costs 42 tokens per session (922 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for defining application-service behavior before choosing implementation details. It covers APIs, background jobs, stored data, permissions, state changes, validation, and failure handling.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to specify service contracts, resource ownership, allowed operations, state transitions, inputs and outputs, and what callers can retry, cancel, or observe.
Why use it?
It prevents backend changes from leaving authority, retries, concurrency, or recovery behavior unclear.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.00922
Opus 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00369
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00184
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00092

Security

Grade A, and why

backend-design scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 63 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Define backend behavior before choosing implementation details

Establish the observable service behavior and its failure boundaries. Use system architecture expertise when service, client, data or deployment boundaries need architectural decisions; this discipline owns behavior inside and between the selected boundaries. Technical conventions own concrete framework, driver and runtime APIs.

Establish authority and invariants

Read the intended journey, existing contracts and accepted decisions.

  • Identify actors, resource ownership, allowed operations and invariants that must survive failures or concurrency.
  • Distinguish authentication from permission to act on each resource, including related resources and worker/tool execution.
  • Client controls and model proposals cannot grant server authority.
  • Use authority and data-flow assessment expertise for changed trust/data boundaries.

Describe each consequential operation from the caller's point of view. Establish what input is accepted, which current state permits it, what change becomes durable, and what the response promises. An accepted request may mean only that work has been recorded; completion means the promised effect has occurred. Make that distinction visible to callers when work is asynchronous.

Follow what happens if the caller times out, sends the same request again, cancels, or checks progress later. Decide which identity belongs to the logical operation and which belongs to an individual attempt. This lets retries and status checks refer to the same work. Ask about unresolved product choices that change these consequences; investigate implementation facts and choose reversible details within accepted constraints.

Preserve state under concurrency and failure

Identify the facts that must remain true when requests overlap. Decide which stored changes form one business operation and protect them with the datastore's transaction and constraint mechanisms. A check performed before a write can become stale before the write occurs; verify that the invariant is still enforced when two callers act together.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

backend-design is a skill published in the GitHub repository joao-aires/agent-skills-public (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 922 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-20.
