infra-jvm-optimization

infra-jvm-optimization is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from joao-aires/agent-skills-public. It costs 40 tokens per session (875 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A resource-optimization skill for applications and infrastructure, including Java-based JVM memory and garbage collection. The JVM is the runtime that executes Java programs; the skill also covers startup, shutdown, scaling, scheduling, and resilience.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to measure bottlenecks, review runtime and deployment settings, tune Java workloads, examine autoscaling and resource limits, and track tested optimization experiments.
Why use it?
It helps identify whether resource or performance changes actually improve cost or throughput without harming stability, rather than relying on configuration changes alone.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00875
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00350
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00175
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00088

Security

Grade A, and why

infra-jvm-optimization scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Infrastructure and JVM optimization

Treat the JVM, application concurrency and hosting resources as one system. Establish where the workload spends time and memory, then form a hypothesis about the limiting resource. A heap setting can change collection behavior without bounding the process's total memory; a replica increase can move pressure to a shared database. Examine the outcome at the user and dependency level as well as the tuned component.

Choose a small experiment that can distinguish the hypothesis from other causes and compare it with the baseline under representative conditions. Optimize cost or throughput subject to user outcomes and stability. A smaller pod or lower heap chart alone is not proof of improvement.

Use JVM flags and ergonomics only for a Java/JVM workload. For Python, Node.js or another runtime, use capacity and demand-modeling expertise and that runtime's current guidance; do not introduce Java or Kubernetes to use this skill.

Modes and evidence

  • Interactive: explain the resource budget, bottleneck and experiment options; resolve workload objectives with the user.
  • Setup/feature: configure and test runtime/infra together, including probes, graceful shutdown, pools and load-sensitive behavior.
  • Recurring review: audit rendered settings and metrics against the previous baseline, identify inconsistencies, prepare measured bounded changes, and track experiments. Do not auto-promote unbenchmarked collector/resource changes to production.

Discover runtime/JDK version, architecture/libc, container launch flags, application/consumer/job roles, deployment overrides, autoscaler metric semantics, resource limits and normal/peak behavior. Inspect effective rendered configuration rather than only base YAML or comments. Consult the optimization guide for deeper implementation details.

Workflow

  1. Record objectives and baseline: journey errors/latency, throughput, startup, restarts, GC pauses/CPU, RSS/heap/native memory, throttling, queue/backlog, downstream load and cost per useful work.
  2. Locate the bottleneck with failing/healthy replica and node comparisons. Distinguish warmup, sustained load, leaks, mounts/inodes/quotas and external saturation.
  3. Build the total memory/CPU/storage budget, including agents, thread stacks, direct buffers, metaspace, code cache, OS overhead and memory-backed volumes.
  4. Inspect CPU requests/limits versus JVM processor detection and framework pool sizing. A processor-count flag shapes ergonomics; it does not reserve/enforce CPU.
  5. Choose a small experiment: collector, heap strategy, pool/buffer bounds, workload concurrency, requests/limits, scheduling or scaling signal. Explain the workload-specific hypothesis and tradeoffs.
  6. Align application and infrastructure: heap/resources/scaling units; startup/readiness/liveness; preStop/application shutdown/pod grace; worker offsets/jobs; topology/PDB/rollout capacity; GitOps/autoscaler ownership.
  7. Test cold start, representative steady/peak load, long-running soak, dependency slowness, draining and scale behavior. Monitor user outcome and resource budget together.
  8. Promote progressively with source/artifact/config identities, rollback triggers and observation window. Preserve explicit production overrides while lower environments validate changes.
  9. Document before/after measurements, regression checks and limits. Retain or revert experiments based on evidence.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

infra-jvm-optimization is a skill published in the GitHub repository joao-aires/agent-skills-public (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 875 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-15.
