job-failure-diagnosis

job-failure-diagnosis is a skill for Claude Code from joao-aires/agent-skills-public. It costs 23 tokens per session (602 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A failure-investigation guide for recurring background jobs, using supplied code, configuration, and execution records. It traces each job from scheduling through completion without replaying the job or claiming a repair was made.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to reconstruct failed runs, compare failures with successful runs, identify missing evidence, and choose the next check that would resolve the main uncertainty.
Why use it?
It separates individual jobs from their retry attempts and finds the first supported point where execution went wrong, instead of relying only on the final error message.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.00602
Opus 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00241
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00120
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00060

Security

Grade A, and why

job-failure-diagnosis scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Diagnose failed jobs

Explain the recurring failure as far as the supplied evidence supports, and identify the next check that would resolve the most important remaining uncertainty. Only supplied artifacts and local analysis are authorized. No live job replay, data access, notification or deployment. Do not claim that a repair was executed.

Reconstruct the failure

Establish what the job should do and what counts as completion from the supplied code and configuration. Distinguish a logical job from its individual execution attempts so retries do not inflate the apparent number of affected jobs.

Connect execution records using the identifiers and timestamps they actually contain. Follow the job from scheduling or enqueueing through execution and completion where evidence exists. Identify the first observed departure from expected behavior; a final failure message may describe a later consequence. Mark missing stages and conflicts between records instead of filling them in.

Compare failed attempts with other supplied failures and, when available, successful attempts. Look for differences in code or configuration versions, input characteristics, duration, dependency responses and workload. Describe the recurring pattern and any exceptions. Report user-visible impact only where the records support it, such as delayed output or repeated side effects.

Test explanations against the records

Trace the failing path through the supplied code and the configuration that applies to those executions. For each plausible explanation, state what mechanism would produce the observed failure, which evidence supports it, and what contradicts it or remains unknown. A matching timestamp or error label alone does not establish a cause.

Choose checks that distinguish the leading explanations. For a timeout, compare the recorded duration with the configured deadline and inspect any supplied evidence of progress, dependency waits or cancellation. A timeout establishes that a deadline was reached; it does not by itself establish insufficient worker capacity. If failures occur under higher workload, use supplied queue, concurrency or resource records to assess whether capacity explains the pattern before recommending more workers.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

job-failure-diagnosis is a skill published in the GitHub repository joao-aires/agent-skills-public (2 stars, last pushed 8d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 602 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-26.
