postgresql-performance

postgresql-performance is a skill for Claude Code from joao-aires/agent-skills-public. It costs 40 tokens per session (697 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for diagnosing and improving PostgreSQL performance, including queries, locks, connections, and maintenance work. PostgreSQL is a relational database, and the guide uses workload measurements to locate where time and resources are spent.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to investigate slow queries, blocked transactions, pool pressure, plan regressions, CPU or storage limits, and maintenance issues. It helps choose safe diagnostics and compare changes using representative data and concurrency.
Why use it?
It prevents changes based only on guesses or average timings, which can miss lock waits, connection pressure, slow disks, or expensive result transfer. It also warns that some diagnostic commands execute statements and may have side effects.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00697
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00279
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00139
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00070

Security

Grade A, and why

postgresql-performance scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 57 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Explain PostgreSQL workload behavior

Establish the server/extension versions, deployment, roles and affected workload before choosing diagnostics. Use existing service objectives or state provisional targets. Read sources and selection for upstream context and primary diagnostic documentation.

Find where time and resources go

Use available pg_stat_statements, activity/wait statistics, locks, pool telemetry and system evidence to distinguish expensive SQL from connection waits, blocked transactions, I/O, CPU, serialization and excessive result transfer. Confirm extension access and collection/reset intervals before interpreting totals. Inspect representative parameter/data/tenant distributions and concurrency; averages can hide a consequential tail.

Diagnostic Execution boundary
Non-executing EXPLAIN Start here when execution would exceed authorized impact.
EXPLAIN ANALYZE Executes the statement, including writes and invoked functions; even SELECT can be expensive or cause effects.

Rollback cannot undo sequence consumption or external function effects. Use a suitable bounded target and privacy-safe inputs; match available EXPLAIN options to the server version.

Read the plan as an explanation of how the database obtains and combines rows. Compare estimated and actual row counts, then inspect how often expensive nodes run and how much work they discard. A poor estimate can change a join choice or multiply work deeper in the plan; buffer activity and spills help distinguish access cost from CPU and memory pressure.

Interpret those observations against representative parameters and data. A sequential scan may be optimal; an index-only scan still depends on visibility information. Statistics, skew, parameter-sensitive/prepared plans, expression shape, sort/pagination and result volume can matter more than a missing index. Form one supported hypothesis and choose a change that can confirm or refute it, rather than treating every plan node as a defect.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

postgresql-performance is a skill published in the GitHub repository joao-aires/agent-skills-public (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 697 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-21.
