live-captions

live-captions is a skill for Claude Code from Josh-E-S/awesome-pexip-skills. It costs 91 tokens per session (2,474 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A real-time caption feature for Pexip video meetings. It displays speech transcripts as people talk, updating draft text until each sentence is final.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add a captions button and on-screen transcript overlay to a meeting app, including support for interim and final text and breakout rooms.
Why use it?
It prevents captions from flickering as the speech recognizer revises its understanding. It also handles whether captions are available, when they are enabled, and when meeting-room changes should clear them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00091 $0.02474
Opus 5 $0.00046 $0.01237
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00495
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00247

Security

Grade A, and why

live-captions scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Pexip live captions

Pexip's MCU produces real-time transcripts via the conferencing node's speech engine. The signaling channel emits onLiveCaptions events with {data, isFinal, speakers}. Webapp3's useLiveCaptions hook turns this into a flickerless caption overlay with auto-clear.

The trick is that captions arrive as a stream of refinements: the engine sends interim text ("hello there"), then a longer interim ("hello there how are"), then finally isFinal: true ("hello there, how are you"). Render naïvely and the caption flashes between revisions. Webapp3's hook handles this.

Quick start

import {useLiveCaptions, useLiveCaptionsAvailable} from '../hooks/useLiveCaptions';

export const CaptionsOverlay: React.FC = () => {
    const isAvailable = useLiveCaptionsAvailable();
    const {data, isEnabled, toggleCaptions} = useLiveCaptions();

    if (!isAvailable) return null;

    return (
        <>
            <button onClick={toggleCaptions}>
                {isEnabled ? 'Hide captions' : 'Show captions'}
            </button>
            {isEnabled && data && <div className="captions-overlay">{data}</div>}
        </>
    );
};

useLiveCaptionsAvailable() checks both the conference's capability and the brand's showLiveCaptionsFeature flag. Use it to gate the toggle button.

The hook implementation

const CLEAR_CAPTIONS_AFTER = 5000; // ms — clear if no new caption within window

export const useLiveCaptions = () => {
    const meeting = useMeetingContext();
    const liveCaptionsEnabled = useLiveCaptionsEnabled(meeting.getLiveCaptionsEnabled);
    const [captions, setCaptions] = useState('');
    const previousCaptions = useRef('');
    const timerRef = useRef<number>(undefined);

    const toggleCaptions = useCallback(() => {
        const enable = !liveCaptionsEnabled;
        meeting.setLiveCaptionsEnabled(enable);  // optimistic UI
        meeting.enableLiveCaptions({enable}, undefined, () => {
            // SDK call failed — roll back UI
            meeting.setLiveCaptionsEnabled(false);
        });
        if (!enable) setCaptions('');
    }, [liveCaptionsEnabled, meeting]);

    useEffect(() => {
        if (!liveCaptionsEnabled) return;

        const renderCaptions = (next: {data: string; isFinal: boolean}) => {
            if (next.isFinal) {
                setCaptions(next.data);
                previousCaptions.current = '';
            } else if (next.data.length > previousCaptions.current.length) {
                // Interim refinement — only update if it grew (avoid flicker on revisions)
                setCaptions(next.data);
                previousCaptions.current = next.data;
            }

            // Reset auto-clear timer on every new caption
            clearTimeout(timerRef.current);
            timerRef.current = window.setTimeout(() => {
                setCaptions('');
            }, CLEAR_CAPTIONS_AFTER);
        };

        const detach = infinityClientSignals.onLiveCaptions.add(renderCaptions);
        return () => {
            clearTimeout(timerRef.current);
            detach();
        };
    }, [liveCaptionsEnabled]);

    // Breakout-room reset
    useEffect(() => {
        if (!meeting.getConferenceFeatureFlags()?.isDirectMedia &&
            meeting.getLiveCaptionsAvailability()) {
            return infinityClientSignals.onCallDisconnected.add(() => {
                meeting.setLiveCaptionsEnabled(false);
                setCaptions('');
                previousCaptions.current = '';
                clearTimeout(timerRef.current);
                meeting.enableLiveCaptions({enable: false}, undefined, e => {
                    logger.error(e, 'Failed to turn off live captions');
                });
            });
        }
    }, [meeting]);

    return {data: captions, isEnabled: liveCaptionsEnabled, toggleCaptions};
};

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
