slack-catch-up

slack-catch-up is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jtalk22/slack-mcp-server. It costs 92 tokens per session (1,269 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Slack catch-up workflow that gathers messages and produces a cited summary of what was missed, what needs a reply, and what matters for a standup or handoff. Slack is a team messaging service.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps prepare morning briefs, weekly catch-ups, incident handoffs, and summaries of unread messages or mentions.
Why use it?
Reading every channel is slow, and an uncited summary is hard to verify. This focuses on relevant conversations and links claims to message times and sources when available.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00092 $0.01269
Opus 5.5 $0.00037 $0.00508
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00254
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00127

Security

Grade A, and why

slack-catch-up scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Catching up on Slack

The server gathers the evidence and you write the summary. Cite every claim by conversation name and message timestamp, plus the permalink when the row has one. Cut any line the reader cannot check.

Through a profile

  1. Call slack_workflows and use the profile the user names, or the one whose workflow_kind and channels fit the ask.
  2. If none fits, create one with slack_workflow_save. Give it a profile_name that says what it is for and the matching workflow_kind from the table below. Add channel IDs from slack_list_conversations, or none to cover everything unread, and priority_people IDs from slack_users_search when the user names people. The profile is saved on this machine and sends nothing to Slack. Tell the user its name, so the next catch-up is one call.
  3. Call slack_catch_me_up with profile_name, and since (ISO 8601) when the user gives a window. Otherwise the cadence sets it: 24 hours for on_demand and daily_8am, 7 days for weekly_monday. A profile with no channels reads the conversations waiting for the user, mentions first.
  4. Write exactly the keys in output_contract.expected_keys, from:
    • signals.unanswered_threads, oldest first. "Unanswered" is mechanical: nobody replied, or the last reply is from the person who opened the thread. Whether it truly needs an answer is your call; say so when you make it.
    • signals.priority_activity and signals.mentions_of_priority_people.
    • signals.busiest_conversations.
    • continuity.commitments, continuity.owner_gaps and continuity.open_questions. These come from phrase and reply-count rules, each with the matched text and, when the workspace URL is known, a permalink. Check them against the message before you repeat them.
  5. Say where reading stopped. One catch-up reads at most 12 conversations, 30 messages from each, and 8 threads of 20 replies (truncation.caps).
    • truncation.conversations_dropped: conversations past the first 12.
    • truncation.conversations_with_more_history: conversations with more than 30 messages in the window.
    • truncation.thread_expansion_capped: some threads were not opened.
    • scope.channels_not_found lists each channel the profile names that could not be read, with the reason. Name every one, so its silence is not mistaken for a quiet channel.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
