bible-nlt-lookup

bible-nlt-lookup is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jtsternberg/claude-plugins. It costs 22 tokens per session (1,113 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A lookup tool for Bible passages and keyword searches using the New Living Translation API. The New Living Translation is a modern English Bible translation; the tool also supports NLTUK, NTV, and KJV.

In plain words
What is it for?
Fetch passages such as chapter ranges, search for words or phrases, and request supported translations.
Why use it?
It avoids manually searching Scripture and handles reference parsing through the API. It also clearly limits requests to the translations the service provides.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00022 $0.01113
Opus 5 $0.00011 $0.00557
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00223
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00111

Security

Grade A, and why

bible-nlt-lookup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/nlt-lookup.sh, scripts/nlt-search.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

NLT Bible Lookup

Look up Bible passages, parse references, and search Scripture using the NLT API at https://api.nlt.to/api.

Authentication

The API key is stored in the environment variable NLT_API_KEY. All requests must include key=$NLT_API_KEY as a query parameter.

Before any API call, verify the key exists:

[ -z "$NLT_API_KEY" ] && echo "ERROR: NLT_API_KEY not set" && exit 1

If missing, report the error and direct to: Settings > env > NLT_API_KEY in Claude global settings.

Supported Translations

Only these versions are available: NLT (default), NLTUK, NTV, KJV. Other translations (ESV, NIV, NASB, etc.) are not available through this API. If a user requests an unsupported translation, report which versions are available.

Utility Scripts

Two scripts handle env var validation, URL encoding, API calls, error handling, and HTML conversion automatically.

Passage lookup:

bash scripts/nlt-lookup.sh "John 3:16-17"
bash scripts/nlt-lookup.sh "Romans 8:28-30" KJV
bash scripts/nlt-lookup.sh "Psalm 23;Psalm 91"

Keyword search:

bash scripts/nlt-search.sh "love one another"
bash scripts/nlt-search.sh "faith" KJV

Both scripts pipe through html-to-markdown when available, otherwise output raw HTML for direct parsing.

Endpoints

  • version (optional) - Bible translation (NLT, NLTUK, NTV, KJV; default: NLT)

Response: HTML containing the passage text. Extract clean readable text with verse numbers preserved before displaying.

2. Search

Search for passages matching keywords.

GET https://api.nlt.to/api/search?text=<query>&key=$NLT_API_KEY

Parameters:

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
