request-validation-error-contract

request-validation-error-contract is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jukrap/ai-agent-playbook. It costs 26 tokens per session (223 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for changing how backend services read requests, validate input, and report failures to clients. It separates invalid input, permission problems, conflicts, missing records, and unexpected errors.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when editing request schemas, validators, routes, middleware, exception handling, error responses, or client-visible failure behavior.
Why use it?
It helps preserve the error formats and status codes that frontend applications and other clients rely on, while keeping sensitive values out of responses and logs.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00026 $0.00223
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.00112
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00045
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00022

Measured 5d ago against content hash 491e06e30682, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-05, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

request-validation-error-contract scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Request Validation Error Contract

Protect request and failure contracts before changing backend validation or error handling.

Workflow

  1. Identify route, handler, schema, DTO, middleware, exception mapper, client callers, and documented error shape.
  2. Separate parsing, validation, authorization, business rule failure, conflict, rate limit, and unexpected error paths.
  3. Preserve stable status codes, error codes, field paths, localization keys, and retry semantics unless the change is explicitly versioned.
  4. Keep sensitive values out of error bodies, logs, traces, and validation messages.
  5. Verify success, invalid input, missing permission, conflict, not found, and unexpected failure paths.
  6. Pair with api-contract-boundary when frontend mocks, generated clients, OpenAPI, or external consumers depend on the shape.

Reference

Read references/request-error-contract.md before editing validators, DTOs, exception filters, middleware, or error response schemas.

Files

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
