repo-to-gem

repo-to-gem is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills. It costs 180 tokens per session (2,941 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow that reads a GitHub repository or documentation folder, combines its contents into a knowledge bundle, and creates setup instructions for a Google Gemini custom Gem. A custom Gem is a configured Gemini assistant with its own instructions and reference material.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to prepare repository or documentation knowledge for a Gemini Gem and generate the Gem's system prompt and setup manifest.
Why use it?
It turns a codebase or documentation set into material an AI assistant can use without manually copying files. It also removes common build files and media from the bundle.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00180 $0.02941
Opus 5.5 $0.00072 $0.01176
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00036 $0.00588
Haiku 4.5 $0.00018 $0.00294

Security

Grade A, and why

repo-to-gem scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 23d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 225 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Repo to Gem

Build the three things a person needs to create a Gemini Gem that is an expert on one repository, so that they can upload and paste without editing anything.

What you deliver

One folder, gem-<slug>/ in the current directory unless the user names another place:

gem-<slug>/
├── knowledge/
│ └── <slug>-knowledge.txt # or <slug>-knowledge.1.txt, .2.txt ... when split
├── gem-instructions.md # paste into the Gem's Instructions box
└── gem-setup.md # name, description, upload list, test prompts, refresh command

The Gem needs a display name and a slug. Take the name from the user; if they gave none, build it from the repo plus the last path segment that says what the content is (yamadashy/repomix at website/client/src/en/guide -> "Repomix Guide"). <slug> is that name in kebab-case (repomix-guide).

The limits you are packing for

These come from Google's help pages and drift over time, so re-check Upload & analyze files in Gemini Apps when a number matters to the outcome.

Limit Value Status
Knowledge files per Gem 10 reported limit
Size per file 100 MB from the help page
Model context window 1M tokens from the help page
Total knowledge you should aim for about 500k tokens heuristic, not a Google limit

The 500k target is a working budget: the knowledge shares the context window with the instructions and the whole conversation, and a Gem that starts half full answers long threads badly. Go over it when the user has a reason, and say that you did.

Token counts come from repomix, which counts with an OpenAI tokenizer. Treat them as an estimate for Gemini, good to within a comfortable margin, not a measurement.

Write knowledge as .txt. Plain text is on every list of accepted Gem file types; .md and .xml are not reliably on them. The content inside can still be Markdown.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
