ism

ism is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jusso-dev/awesome-Australian-compliance. It costs 265 tokens per session (1,886 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A reference and drafting aid for Australia's Information Security Manual, the Australian Government's catalogue of cybersecurity controls. It covers controls, implementation guidance, security plans, applicability statements, and changes between quarterly releases.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to look up ISM controls, draft System Security Plans and Statements of Applicability, assess classifications such as OFFICIAL or PROTECTED, and compare manual releases.
Why use it?
It helps you identify which controls apply and produce documents that refer to the correct version of the manual. It is also useful when preparing evidence for an IRAP assessment, an independent Australian government security review.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00265 $0.01886
Opus 5 $0.00133 $0.00943
Sonnet 5 $0.00053 $0.00377
Haiku 4.5 $0.00026 $0.00189

Security

Grade A, and why

ism scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Information Security Manual (ISM)

The ISM is the Australian Government's primary cyber security control catalogue, published by the Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre. It is updated quarterly. Controls have integer identifiers (for example ISM-0123) which are reused across releases unless the control is retired or split. Wording, applicable classifications and recommended implementations all change between quarterly releases.

Use this skill to look up ISM controls, draft System Security Plan (SSP) and Statement of Applicability (SoA) sections that reference the ISM, identify applicable controls for a target classification, and surface what has changed between releases.

When to use this skill

  • The user references an ISM control number, the ISM directly, or any of its guideline groups.
  • The user is preparing for, or responding to, an IRAP assessment.
  • The user is writing an SSP, an SoA, an evidence pack, or a risk register that needs to cite the ISM.
  • The user asks about classification (OFFICIAL, OFFICIAL: Sensitive, PROTECTED).
  • The codebase or estate exposes signals that map to ISM guideline groups: cryptography config, gateway and network egress controls, system monitoring pipelines, software- development practices, mobile device management, evaluated product use.
  • The user wants to know what changed between two ISM releases (release notes, list of changes documents).

What this skill knows

  • The structure of the ISM: an introduction, then a set of guidelines, each containing a list of controls with identifiers, applicable classifications and recommended implementations.
  • The set of guideline groups (current structure; pre-2024 structure differed). One reference page per guideline lives under guidelines/.
  • A version register at versions.md listing the quarterly releases the ACSC has published, with a note that control identifiers and wording change between releases.
  • The classification model at classifications.md. Phase 1 of this pack covers up to PROTECTED.
  • That the ISM is not the Essential Eight. Many controls overlap, but the ISM is the larger catalogue.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

ism is a skill published in the GitHub repository jusso-dev/awesome-Australian-compliance (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 265 tokens to every session and 1,886 once invoked, about $0.0013 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
