distill-skill

distill-skill is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from JustinGastby/Hermes-Mind-Skill. It costs 81 tokens per session (813 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for deciding whether a completed coding task should become a reusable Skill, a written procedure an AI assistant can follow later. It can create a new SKILL.md file or improve an existing one.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after multi-step tasks, tricky bug fixes, recovery from errors, user corrections, or when someone asks to save a working method.
Why use it?
It preserves solutions to difficult or repeated problems so future work does not need to rediscover the same steps and mistakes.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00081 $0.00813
Opus 5 $0.00041 $0.00407
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00163
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00081

Security

Grade A, and why

distill-skill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Distill Skill

Mirrors the self-improving skill loop from Hermes Agent: after solving something non-trivial, decide whether to save the approach so future tasks skip the trial-and-error instead of re-deriving it from scratch.

When to propose a skill

Propose distillation when the just-finished task matches any of:

  • Took several tool calls / multiple steps to get right (roughly 4+)
  • Involved recovering from an error, a wrong turn, or a failed attempt before succeeding
  • The user corrected your approach mid-task
  • The user explicitly asked to save/remember/turn this into a skill

Skip silently (don't mention this check to the user) when:

  • The task was a single simple edit, a question, or a read-only lookup
  • The approach is a one-off unlikely to recur (e.g. a throwaway debug print)
  • It would just duplicate an existing skill's content (see below)
  • The procedure would require hardcoding secrets, credentials, or machine-specific paths

Workflow

  1. Check for an existing skill. List .claude/skills/*/SKILL.md and ~/.claude/skills/*/SKILL.md. If one already covers this workflow, prefer patching it (add a pitfall, tighten a step, add/replace an example) over creating a duplicate.
  2. Draft a short proposal first, not a file. Include:
    • Proposed name (lowercase, hyphens; this also becomes the /name slash command)
    • One-sentence description (what it does + when to use it)
    • 3-5 bullets covering what it would capture: the procedure, key commands, pitfalls hit, and how success was verified
  3. Ask the user to confirm with a compact question, e.g. "这个方法要不要 存成一个 skill,下次同类任务直接复用?" Do not write any file before the user agrees — a wrong or premature skill is worse than no skill.
  4. On yes, create (or patch) .claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md: YAML frontmatter with name/description, concise Markdown body, concrete steps/commands over prose, one level of progressive disclosure (a linked reference file) if the material is long.
  5. On no or no response, drop it. Don't create the file and don't ask again for this same task.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

distill-skill is a skill published in the GitHub repository JustinGastby/Hermes-Mind-Skill (5 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 81 tokens to every session and 813 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
