prototype

prototype is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Justinmendezai/The-Adam-Repo. It costs 51 tokens per session (564 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A temporary prototype used to answer an unresolved design question before building the real feature. It can be a small terminal program for testing data or business rules, or several UI versions on one route.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to explore state changes, business logic, data shapes, user flows, or visual layouts, then carry the useful conclusions into a product plan or architecture decision.
Why use it?
When the intended behavior or interface is unclear, writing production code or tests too early can lock in the wrong design. A disposable sketch makes alternatives easier to compare.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.00564
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00282
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00113
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

prototype scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 55 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

prototype

Adapted from Matt Pocock's prototype. When you don't know what to build yet, a sketch is worth more than a spec.

Two flavors

Flavor A — Terminal sketch (state, business logic, data shape)

Use when the question is "what does the model look like?" or "how should this state machine behave?":

  • Fastest possible runnable code.
  • One file usually. tsx, python -c, bun run, whatever's lowest-friction.
  • Print the state. Mutate it. Print again.
  • No persistence, no auth, no UI polish.
  • Throw away when done. Insights go into a PRD or ADR.

Flavor B — UI variations (visual design, UX flow)

Use when the question is "what should this look like?" or "what flow makes sense?":

  • One route in the project (e.g. /_proto).
  • Render 2–4 variations side-by-side or behind a toggle.
  • Use real data shapes if possible, fake data otherwise.
  • Each variation gets a name. The user picks one.

When NOT to prototype

  • The behavior is well-understood. Drop straight to tdd.
  • The data shape is well-understood. Same.
  • The user has already settled on the approach via grilling. Don't second-guess via prototype.

Workflow

  1. Ask the user the design question explicitly. Get their candidate answers.
  2. Write each candidate as a runnable sketch.
  3. Walk through the sketches together (you describe, user reads).
  4. The user picks one or hybridizes.
  5. Write down the choice as an ADR.
  6. Throw away the sketches. They're not the implementation. The implementation comes from tdd/tests-first against the chosen design.

Hard rules

  • Prototype code never ships. If it does, it becomes legacy fast. Mark _proto/ or prototypes/ in .gitignore if needed.
  • Prototype code is not tested. The cost-benefit doesn't work for throwaway code.
  • The takeaway from a prototype is a decision, captured as an ADR — not the code itself.

Output

A throwaway sketch (or set of sketches) and an ADR recording the chosen design. The sketches are git-ignored or in a clearly-marked throwaway folder.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

prototype is a skill published in the GitHub repository Justinmendezai/The-Adam-Repo (12 stars, last pushed 18d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 564 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
