obsidian-markdown

obsidian-markdown is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jxoesneon/Ciel. It costs 46 tokens per session (1,014 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide to Obsidian Flavored Markdown, an extension of standard Markdown used by the Obsidian note-taking app. It explains linked notes, embedded files, callouts, properties, tags, and math or diagram syntax.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to author and edit Obsidian notes with wikilinks, embeds, callouts, frontmatter properties, tags, code blocks, and diagrams.
Why use it?
It prevents notes from using Obsidian-specific syntax incorrectly or losing useful links and metadata. It also explains how to check that the result displays properly in Obsidian.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.01014
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.00507
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00203
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00101

Security

Grade A, and why

obsidian-markdown scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 76 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

CIEL ADAPTATION: Obsidian Flavored Markdown

Create and edit valid Obsidian Flavored Markdown, which extends CommonMark and GFM with wikilinks, embeds, callouts, properties, comments, and math/diagram syntax. Standard Markdown (headings, bold, lists, tables, code blocks) is assumed knowledge; this skill covers only Obsidian-specific extensions.

Authoring Workflow

  1. Frontmatter: Add properties (title, tags, aliases) at the top of the file
  2. Content: Use standard Markdown for structure plus Obsidian-specific syntax below
  3. Links: [[wikilinks]] for in-vault notes (auto-tracks renames); [text](url) for external URLs only
  4. Embeds: ![[embed]] for inline content from other notes, images, or PDFs
  5. Callouts: > [!type] for highlighted information
  6. Verify: Confirm the note renders correctly in Obsidian's reading view
  • [[Note Name]] — link to note
  • [[Note Name|Display Text]] — custom display text
  • [[Note Name#Heading]] — link to heading
  • [[Note Name#^block-id]] — link to block
  • [[#Heading in same note]] — same-note heading link
  • Define block IDs by appending ^block-id to a paragraph; for lists/quotes place the ID on a separate line after the block

Embeds

  • ![[Note Name]] — embed full note
  • ![[Note Name#Heading]] — embed section
  • ![[image.png]] / ![[image.png|300]] — image, optional width
  • ![[document.pdf#page=3]] — PDF page

Callouts

  • > [!note] — basic callout
  • > [!warning] Custom Title — callout with custom title
  • > [!faq]- Collapsed by default — foldable (- collapsed, + expanded)
  • Types: note, tip, warning, info, example, quote, bug, danger, success, failure, question, abstract, todo

Properties (Frontmatter)

  • tags — searchable labels (also settable inline via #tag / #nested/tag)
  • aliases — alternative note names for link suggestions
  • cssclasses — CSS classes for styling
  • Tag rules: letters, numbers (not first char), underscores, hyphens, forward slashes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
